Paul SHELEMEY Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal from Feb. 27 to Feb. 29, 2016.
SHELEMEY, Paul Roman Albert
CLU, CH.F.C., CHS
1936 - 2016
With heavy hearts we announce that Paul Shelemey of St. Albert/Sturgeon County passed away on February 25, 2016 shortly after his 80th birthday. As was his wish, he died peacefully in his home, with his loving family around him. A strong man, he put up one heck of a fight against cancer of the esophagus.
Paul was born January 22, 1936 at Radway, where his parents Anne (Myroon) and Roman Shelemey lived after they married. His father worked with leather, and set up shop there in 1932, repairing shoes and making harnesses. Paul was the firstborn and only son of four children. His family moved to Thorhild where they lived from 1937 until 1944, then moved to North Edmonton.
Paul worked all his life, beginning at age 10 with a paper route delivering the Edmonton Bulletin; then in Holton's Drugstore during high school. At Canada Packers he was one of their top salesmen, moving to Lethbridge and Nelson and back to Edmonton with a young family. He was engaging, energetic, enthusiastic and passionate about his work and family.
In 2015 Paul celebrated 50 years in the Life Insurance and Financial Planning profession. He received numerous awards in this business, recognized for his quality care and custom service for his many clients. Paul said his "clients became friends, and friends became clients." He appreciated and had the greatest respect for all his business associates and staff. He was always involved and contributing in significant ways to his community.
Paul was always a physically active man, self-disciplined to exercise for his health, and he particularly enjoyed golfing, cross-country skiing and gardening, as well as all the outdoor work required in acreage living.
Paul was very proud of his six children: Lea (Ken Klein), Leslie, Troy (Sandra) and Aaron from his first family with Lorraine; seven grandchildren and five great- grandchildren. He is also survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Darline (Iftody) and their sons: Steffan and Nathen (Robyn); mother-in-law Delima Iftody and his sisters Sylvia (Lloyd) Medwid and Lynn Shelemey, and many nieces and nephews. Paul was predeceased by an infant daughter Tracy, his sister Mary Groat and brothers-in-law Bob Groat and Ed Kozak.
The family greatly appreciates all the Health Care professionals from the Morinville Palliative Home Care Office and Dr. Barbara Fischer, who all provided exemplary care, respect and comfort for Paul in his last days at home. Paul and his family are especially grateful to Dr. Peter Brindley and the U. of A. ICU for bringing him back to Edmonton from the hospital in Mexico. Thank you to Dr. Espinoza, The Hospital of Angeles and the resourceful individuals and teams at these wonderful companies – Encon, Greenshield and Allianz, all who in many ways helped Paul and Darline return home.
Services will be officiated by Rev. Frs. Mircea Panciuk, George Bazgan and Cornell Zubritzky, at St. John Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral at 10951-107 St. in Edmonton. Evening Prayers will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 3 and the Funeral Service will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 4, 2016. After lunch at St. John, Interment will be at 4:00 p.m. at the Boian Church Cemetery east of Willingdon, Alberta, followed by a lunch in the Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St.John Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, Sts. Constantine and Elena Romanian Orthodox Church of Edmonton and St. Mary's Boian Church.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the entire Shelemey family. Having a connection with the family during their school years allowed me to become acquainted with everyone. A recent conversation with Nathen was wonderful and allowed me to reconnect with what everyone was doing. Take care of yourselves during this very sad time - my thoughts are with you.

It was a privilege to get to know Paul, on a professional level as Members of the Million Dollar Round Table, and on a personal level (as the Father of one of my clients). He was the consummate professional, caring for his clients as friends. His wise counsel enhanced my practice and my life, in more ways than one. I shall never forget an evening spent in Vancouver over a great dinner and two bottles of wine (one of each of our favorites) talking business and life. We shared the pain of losing a child...and the joy of grandchildren and the many benefits of our great profession. We had planned to meet in Vancouver once again this summer...and, in his honor, I will return to the place of that delightful evening in his beloved Canada and raise a glass in his memory. Peace, my Friend, "You have fought the good fight...you have finished the race...you have Kept the Faith"!

To the entire Shelemey family, it is with great sadness that I hear of the passing of Paul. He was a great man, brilliant in his practice but above all, the proudest of his family. I had the opportunity to walk for a few minutes last spring with Paul and the pride of his boys, and grandchildren shone through even in just those passing moments. One can only dream of having the impact Paul did on both the community and the insurance/financial industry as a whole. From my family to yours....all the love, hugs and support coming your way.
