Rebecca Irene Underwood

Rebecca "Irene" Woods Underwood, 92, passed away December 25, 2017 in Grapevine, Texas.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 29, 2017 at 1:30 pm at First United Methodist Church, Colleyville, Texas with a public viewing one hour prior to the service, followed by interment at Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park in Colleyville, Texas. A private family viewing will be held at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home on Thursday afternoon.

Irene was born on September 2, 1925 in Camden, Missouri, the fourth of eight children born to the late Leslie Lyon and Anna (Cringan) Woods. Irene married Joseph Edwin (Joe) Underwood on April 1, 1944 in Olathe, Kansas. After Joe's return from service during World War II, the couple settled in Odessa, Missouri and began raising their three children, Janet, Debbie and David. In 1965, the family moved to Irving, Texas and eventually to Colleyville, Texas in 1969, where Irene resided until 2016.

Irene worked in the installment lending division of various banking institutions prior to her retirement in 1990. She was active in First United Methodist Church, Colleyville in multiple capacities over her forty-five plus year membership. She gave generously of her time as a volunteer to GRACE (Grapevine Relief and Community Exchange) for many years. Irene was an avid reader and quilter and delighted in puzzles of all kinds. She loved the outdoors, camping, traveling and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joe, daughter Janet Underwood Smith and son-in-law Charles Richard Smith, four brothers and two sisters.

Irene was a much-loved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend and will be deeply missed by many. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Underwood Elms and husband Joe Elms of Keller, Texas; son, David Underwood and wife Lynne Underwood of Colleyville, Texas; nine grandchildren, Melissa Elms, Angela Smith Peterson and husband Mark, Robin Elms Plata and husband John, Melinda Smith Woods and husband Ronald, Jason Elms and wife Shannon, Joseph David Smith, Christine Underwood, Matthew Underwood and Nathan Underwood; and by ten great-grandchildren; Allie Plata, Jacob Plata, Cara Woods, Carly Elms, Craig Peterson, Ryan Woods, Jude Elms, Shane Peterson, William Woods and Cheyanne Underwood; her sister, Diana Woods Pulse of Richmond, Missouri and by numerous and much loved nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, cards, etc., the family suggests a donation in Irene's name be made to First United Methodist Church, Colleyville.
