Rose McDONNELL Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal from Jan. 9 to Jan. 10, 2014.
McDONNELL, Rose
It is with a great deal of sadness that the family of Roseanne McDonnell announces her peaceful passing on January 6, 2014.
Rose was born on November 28, 1919 in Miltown, Co. Cavan, Ireland. One of 10 children she grew up on a small farm until the age of 14 when she went to work in Dublin, Ireland. At age 16 she travelled to England to find work. She met Martin McDonnell (her true soul mate for life) in Manchester, England and they married in 1940. After having 6 children they moved to Edmonton, Canada in 1957 to find new opportunities for their family. Rose made Edmonton her new home and was strongly committed to the health and welfare of her family, friends and community.
Rose instilled in her family her own values of hard work, generosity, integrity and a strong sense of family. She was always very close to her own family and went to Ireland as often as she could to visit and keep in touch. Mom was particularly happy in the company of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She took great delight when relatives from Ireland came to visit.
Rose was very active in the Irish community in Edmonton from the beginning of the Irish Sports and Social Society and many the times when there were new comers over for dinner that didn't know anyone, but were made welcome and helped settle in.
Rose is predeceased by her husband (Martin McDonnell) and two sons (Anthony and Michael). She is also predeceased by her parents (Patrick and Roseanne), her sisters Greta and Maureen and brothers Michael, James, and Patrick.
She is survived by her sons Patrick (Joan), Martin, daughter Bernadette (Leo) and son James and many grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Chris, and brothers Eamon and Tommy (presently living in Ireland).
There will be a Celebration of Life at St. John the Evangelist Church, 9830 – 148 Street, Edmonton, on Friday, January 10, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Paul Kavanagh officiating.
The family would also like to recognize the staff of Unit 2ab of the Grandview Extended Care hospital in Edmonton for their kindness, compassion, understanding and tolerance for all the patients under their care. Despite a heavy workload they always presented themselves with a high degree of professionalism and humanity for those in their charge.
Memorial donations in memory of Rose may be made to the charity of one's choice.

What a great lady. So sorry and sad to hear of Aunt Rose's passing. Still have, and treasure, the beautiful cotton patchwork quilt she sent over to me years ago. Hope you are all doing okay. A tree has been planted in her memory in Ontario. Sincere condolences to Pat, Bernadette, Marty and James.
