Upendra BANIK Obituary
1930 - 2015
On Thursday, February 19, 2015, peacefully, at the age of 85 at St. Mary's Hospital. Predeceased by his first wife Nirupoma (deceased 1953), his second wife Gita (deceased 2003) and his five siblings. Proud father of his two sons Tuhin "Bob" (Pompa) and Marc. Loving grandfather to Neil. Born in Chittagong, India, 1930. Graduate of Michigan State University and youngest doctorate (D.Sc.) in science of the University of Calcutta. Research scientist in Reproductive Endocrinology, publishing original works at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, with Dr. Gregory Pincus, co-inventor of the modern day anovluant known as "The Pill". Immigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1965, to become Senior Research Scientist at Ayerst, McKenna & Harrison, where he developed with his colleagues, an hCG-based method of diagnosis of early human pregnancy. Later worked as an entrepreneur, and in his retirement pursued his passion of being a self-made philosopher. A dear father, mentor, colleague and "brother" to many, he will be fondly remembered. Funeral Service followed by Cremation to be held on Saturday, February 28, 2015, noon to 2 p.m., Rideau Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, 4275 des Sources, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Tel. (514) 685-3344.

Upendra Banik was an outstanding reproductive biologist with patents and excellent publications. He was very devoted to his Family,very conscientious in his work and showed much kindness and generosity of spirit. Upendra was always loyal to his family,friends,place of employment and to Canada. He always helped those in need and others who could benefit from his success in the U.S. And Canada.

I was fortunate to have been the son of a such great father. Dad was ambitious, adventurous, courageous, inspirational, warm, and kind-hearted. I shall always cherish the wonderful memories of family life with Dad, which included many road trips, weekend and Friday night ski trips to the Laurentians, family vacations across Canada and the United States, parties. Dad was inspired to establish a biomedical research company from scratch (Bioscan Continental), and I have many fond memories working with him during my student years. May your soul rest in eternal peace. Om Shanti.
