Roger Lorrey Obituary

Roger Russell 'Russ' Lorrey
was Tewksbury special-ed teacher, vet; 84

PEPPERELL -- Roger Russell "Russ" Lorrey, died in his home surrounded by his family on May 6, following a long illness.

Russ was born in Lowell, MA on December 9, 1925 to Dora Elizabeth (White) and William Fletcher Lorrey.

He served in the US Navy Armed Guard and was a decorated veteran of WWII. As a signalman on the Liberty ships SS Felix Grundy and James M. Gillis, he participated in missions to Murmansk, Russia, France, and the Mediterranean and an LST 718 in the Pacific Theater.

After the war, he married Helen F. McGuire on August 17, 1947. Together, they built a home in Tewksbury where they lived until moving to Pepperell in 1969.

Russ worked in retail while earning a degree in Business Administration (Marketing) at Boston University and later received a Master of Education at Boston State College. He taught special education for the Tewksbury Public School System, retiring after 23 years of service. Never one to be idle, he continued to work holding many jobs, including carpenter, house painter and security guard at NEBS.

An avid sportsman, he hunted and fished all his life. He was an amateur radio operator (W1VBO) for more than 60 years. Russ loved music, and he and Helen made a beautiful couple on any dance floor. Most everyone will remember him telling jokes - he quite enjoyed making people laugh.

Russ is survived by his beloved wife, Helen & their six children, Susan of Lowell; Joanne of Utah, Ellen & husband Mark Barton of Clinton, Janet & husband, Steve Harris of Amesbury, John and wife, Linda (Frawley) of Kittery Pt., Maine; Elizabeth of Groton; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends.

At his request, no public services will be held. The family is grateful for the wonderful care and compassion provided by his family doctor, David M. Spiegelman MD, and Nashoba Nursing Services and Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Nashoba Nursing Service & Hospice, 2 Shaker Rd. Suite D225, Shirley, MA 01464.

I will always remember Russ as a funny compassionate man who cared for his extended family Very Much. He hated to fly so he drove to Las Vegas NV to visit a few times before trying the flying experience. I always thought that his fear of flying was odd for a man so smart! Being a special ed teacher is truly a special skill, Uncle Russ will be missed by many, Love Ed McGuire

To the entire Lorrey family: the world has lost a good man but his personality and sense of humor live on in all of you. Much love and prayers to all of you as you deal with the loss of a man who was obviously loved so much by so many. God Bless.

Dear Helen and family,
Sending our love and condolences at this sad time. We too loved Russ and will cherish his memory of jokes and laughter. His ability to put others at ease and his fantastic dancing are hallmarks of his time with all of us. He was a hero too for his efforts in WWll, but he always played down that fact-a genuine patriot. We will see you all soon.

I worked with Russ back at the Tewksbury Junior High School in the early 70's. He was like a father to me with his wisdom and stories and advice to never take yourself too seriously.
He was truly a teacher's teacher. I learned much from him and carried it with me in my long teaching career.
God bless him.
