JOANNA ROWELL Obituary

JOANNA (JAN) FORTUNE ROWELL Joanna (Jan) Fortune Rowell of Las Vegas passed away in hospice care on April 20, 2021 at the age of 80. Born in Evanston, IL to Peter and Charlotte Fortune, she graduated from Smith College in 1961, married David Benton Rowell in 1962, and gave birth to their son Andrew Fortune Rowell in 1969. For 40 years she was a secondary school teacher and administrator; she was in her 22nd year of teaching AP courses in European History and Psychology at The Meadows in Las Vegas. Living in Santa Barbara in the 1970s, Jan served as President of the Santa Barbara Symphony League and was a docent at the Museum of Art. She has always loved and supported classical music, opera, art and artists, and theatre. She was an avid reader. Upon moving to Las Vegas, Jan became important in the growth and development of Grace In The Desert Episcopal Church; she loved singing in the choir and at the time of her death was on the vestry. Jan was predeceased by her parents and brother Peter Fortune of Detroit, and is survived by her husband David, a retiree, and son Andrew, who teaches in Henderson. Celebration of Life and religious services are pending. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Cancer Society.
