Dorothy Watson Briggs Obituary

Bluffton, SC- Concluding a long and well-lived life, Dorothy Watson Briggs, age 99, died peacefully on April 7. Known as Mother, Dot, MaMa and Great MaMa, she had a twinkle in her eyes, vitality even in her later years, and a love of The Lord. She was extraordinarily kind and accepting to everyone she met, endearing her to young and old alike.
Born October 15, 1918 in Bonaire, GA, to Tinie Barker Watson and Joseph Henry Watson, Dot graduated from Perry High School, Perry, GA and a business college in Macon, GA. She and John Hardee Briggs had a long and happy marriage in Anniston, AL, until his death in 1982.
After her children started school, Dot enjoyed a 20-year career in the Anniston City Schools in secretarial and financial positions. She was active in the Anniston community and The First Methodist Church, serving in leadership positions including United Methodist Women. She relocated to Bluffton, SC in 1999, where she was actively involved at Bluffton United Methodist Church and a leader in several ministries. While living at Sun City she enjoyed Silver Striders and fitness center classes and events.
Dot loved nature, especially birds and flowers, and the outdoors. She was a worldwide traveler, as well as all US states and was a champion 5K walker in her 80's. She loved her family and friends, always putting their interests before her own. Her loved ones, and even casual acquaintances, felt enriched by having had her in their lives.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Dorothy and Frank Bowen, a son William Watson Briggs; grandchildren: Lucia and Jason Cox, Leslie Turner, Melanie Briggs, Frank and Tory Bowen, Anne and Eric Ford, Tom and Margaret Bowen and great-grandchildren: Jabe and Lyra Cox, Jack and Xander Bowen, Emily and Liam Bowen; Conor, Logan and Maddie Ford.
A memorial service will be held at Bluffton United Methodist Church, April 28 at 11:00 AM, with interment of ashes later in Anniston, AL. Contributions may be made to Bluffton United Methodist Church or Hospice Care of the Low Country.
