Robert Ridgway Bishop

Robert Ridgway Bishop, known to all, including his grandchildren, as Bob, died Thursday, May 4, 2023. Bob was a teacher of English, an administrator, coach, advisor. Head of Upper School and Academic Dean at the Episcopal Academy for thirty-five years. Bob majored in English at Princeton where he played squash and soccer and made lifelong friends. He received a law degree from University of Pennsylvania school of law in 1965. In summer Bob was a dedicated camper and later a counselor, assistant director and trustee at Camp Kieve in Nobleboro, Maine. While serving as a resident advisor in freshman dorms at University of Pennsylvania when he was a law student, Bob had a transformative conversation with a professor and mentor, Paul Mishkin and subsequently joined the Peace Corps in Tanzania where he met his wife, Sally from Belfast, Northern Ireland. The family returned to the US in 1971 for graduate work at Harvard School of Education. On completion of a master's degree in teaching, Bob began his tenure at EA. He is remembered by his students, colleagues, faculty and staff for his deep love of teaching literature, his steady leadership and his ever kind and thoughtful disposition. Bob is survived by his wife of fifty-five years, Sally, his sons, Stephen (Jeannine), Sean, and Benjamin (Linden), his four grandchildren (John, Margot, Alice and Violet), and three siblings, Bailey Bishop. Marjorie Brown and Elaine Politis. Predeceased by his brother, John LeBoutillier Bishop. Friends and family are invited to a memorial service at the Class of 1944 Chapel at Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square at 10:30 Saturday, May 13.
