Larry Shafer Obituary

Larry Wayne Shafer

BELLVILLE: Larry Wayne Shafer knew how to tell a good joke. Not only did he deliver great punch lines, the amount of jokes that he told where equally impressive. Fun loving and quite ornery, Larry made people laugh and smile. On Sunday, December 30, 2012 Larry Wayne Shafer of Bellville, passed away in Mansfield MedCentral Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer.

Larry was born May 15, 1947 in Lexington the son of Lewis and Mildred (Spohn) Shafer and graduated from Madison High School.

Serving in the United States Air Force, Larry worked as an electrician, and was honorably discharged. While in the Air Force, Larry was stationed in North Dakota, where he met his future bride, Marla Schmit.

Working for CSX Railroad as a mechanic, Larry retired after 32 years.

One of Larry's favorite television shows was Cash Explosion. After faithfully watching for years, Larry claimed he knew which letters brought the biggest cash prizes. That was Larry, having fun even in the midst of life's valleys.

Larry enjoyed hunting and fishing. He played softball and also worked on cars with his son. Larry also loved playing poker at Tall Timber in Butler.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Marla (Schmit) Shafer of Bellville; children Kimberly (Stephen) Jordan of Bellville, Kenneth Shafer of Mt. Vernon, and Krystalyn Delancy of Bellville; mother Mildred Shafer of Mansfield; grandchildren Samantha, Austin, Kalob, Noah, Dominik, Champ, Kane "Spanky", Paityn; sister Trudy (Larry) Currel of Kentucky; brother's Rick (Deb) Shafer and David (Terri) Shafer both of Mansfield.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I am sure you don't remember me but I went to Bethel Bible Church many many years ago and have often wondered where the folks I knew from there ended up. I wore a black and white polk-a-dot dress Midge made for Trudy. Readin the guest book I see the name Shook and that stirs memories as well. My deepest sympathy for your loss.

I am so sorry for your loss. I know you do not remember me but I went to Bethel Bible Church many many years ago. Midge gave me a dress she made for Trudy with black polks dots. We spent the night with camp fire girls. I think of that church so often and the people I met there. My deepest sympathy.

Although I wasn't able to keep in touch with Larry after he grew up, I remember him well as a kid, as well as his parents and sister. I'm sorry he had cancer which took him at a fairly young age. I certainly trust that he knew Jesus and is now with Him for eternity. May the comfort found only through Christ be felt by his family.
