Margaret Vassar Obituary

GEORGETOWN | Margaret B. Vassar, 79, widow the Rev. Isaac Vassar, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005 at her residence.

She was born, Dec. 5, 1925 in Alcolu, a daughter of the late N.C. Burke Sr. and Virginia Mae Walker Burke.

Mrs. Vassar retired as a nurse with Hampton General Hospital in 1986. She was a member of the garden club in Brunson and enjoyed gardening and flower arranging. She was also a member of the Brunson Book & Music Club. She and her late husband retired to Georgetown in 1999.

She was a member of Brunson Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for over 30 years. She was also a member of the choir, WMU and Women's Prayer Group. She served with the Rev. Vassar at Brunson, Hickory Grove, Plum Branch, Long Branch and Screven Baptist Churches during his long career.

Surviving are; one son, the Rev. Stephen Vassar and his wife, Cathy, of Columbia; two daughters; Cynthia V. Mixson and her husband, Donald, of Georgetown and Sybil V. Woodward and her husband, Tommy, of Isle of Palms; seven grandchildren, Hope Sloan of Wilmington, N.C., Dana Wagner of San Antonio, Texas, Drexel Mixson of Myrtle Beach, the Rev. Brian Mixson of Simpsonville, Heather Anderson of Pawleys Island, Stephanie Black of Milton, Fla. and Faith Kendall of Brooklyn, N.Y.; thirteen great-granchildren; a brother, N.C. Burke Jr. of Sumter and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005 at 2 p.m. in Brunson Baptist Church. Officiating will be Dr. David Demming, the Rev. Stephen Vassar and the Rev. Brian Mixson. Burial, directed by Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home of Hampton, will follow in Brunson Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home in Hampton
