Bernice Margaret (Hansen) McKay, 83 of Anacortes was born on December 1, 1938, in Seattle, WA, the daughter of Karl and Irene (Berntsen) Hansen. She left us on December 30, 2021, to join her beloved husband of 44 years, Dale McKay; her parents; brother, Karl "Sonny" and nephews: Dan Hansen, Brian and Robin Cameron.
Bernice's family lived in the Ballard where she grew up and moved to Anacortes in 1940s following the passing of her dad. She attended the Nelson Elementary School in Anacortes. It was located where the San Juan Bowling Alley used to be. Bernice then went on to attend The Columbia Junior High School which was located a block away from the current AHS on K Avenue.
Upon her marriage to Dale, Bernice moved with her husband to Silverlake in Everett where they lived until his passing, at which time she decided to return to Anacortes to be close to her siblings: Julie and Karl "Sonny".
Bernice was very outgoing, making many friends, always smiling and laughing. She had a passion for bowling and was part of the Bowling league in Everett; her other favorite pastimes were completing crossword puzzles, playing the slots and bingo.
Bernice is survived by her sister, Julie Pederson, sister-in-law: Sharon Hansen; nieces: Kim (Dan Parmer) and Christal (Jessie Brown); and nephew, Scott (Sandy) Cameron.
To honor her memory donations are suggested to any of the following: Helping Hands Food Bank of Skagit County, or the Anacortes Salvation Army Food Bank or the Skagit Meals On Wheels or to a charity of your choice.
