Carl Henry Baker Carl Henry Baker, 76, of Fairmont passed away Thursday, March 29, 2012 at his home. He was born in Fairmont on January 11, 1936, a son of the late Paul D. and Elizabeth M. (Cordray) Baker. Carl proudly served his country as a Sergeant with the United States Marine Corp. He was retired from Owens-Illinois, where he worked for 10 years. He also worked as an insurance agent for Allstate Insurance and Eric Insurance, for Ohio Valley Paving, at Tygart Lake Golf Course and most recently at the Cozy Nook Lounge where he loved all his friends there. Carl was fondly known as having the nicknames "Shake and Bake" and "CB" amongst his family and friends. He was a graduate of East Fairmont High School where he was the leading scorer on the basketball team and a member of the football team. He was a member of the VFW, where he had many loving friends, and a past member of Green Hills Country Club. Carl was an avid sports fan and golfer. He played basketball at Fairmont State University and was an avid fan of FSU athletics, East Fairmont High School athletics, WVU athletics and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a high school basketball and football referee and was known as the "Mayor of Fairmont". He loved to travel throughout the United States and Canada to watch his grandchildren play hockey and he enjoyed participating in and supporting the Marco's Can-Am Golf Tournament. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Betty Jane (Morris) Baker of Fairmont, the couple would have celebrated their 50th anniversary June 16th, two daughters, Carla Wood of Fairmont and Cathy Richards and her husband Steven of Morgantown and four grandchildren, Kyle Richards of Morgantown, Brandon Richards of Morgantown, Carli Gravely of Myrtle Beach and Madison Wood of Fairmont. Also surviving is one brother, Richard Baker and his wife Jolyn of Albany, GA, two sisters, Edna Mae Swisher and her husband Bill of Rawlings, MD and Frances Stansberry of Keyser, a sister-in-law, Linda Parks as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Baker and a brother-in-law, Pete Stansberry. Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St. Fairmont on Saturday from 1-8 pm and Sunday from 12-1pm. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Sunday, April 1, 2012 at 1 pm with Rev. Dr. Holley Faulkner officiating. Interment will follow at McCurdysville Cemetery in Marion County where full military honors will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard.
