Chris Schreurs died peacefully in her home on June 19, 2024, surrounded by her loving family after a 22-year struggle with Parkinson's Disease.
A visitation will be held at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N. Ankeny Blvd, Ankeny, IA) on Monday, June 24, 2024, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and a Mass of Christian Burial at St Mary's-Holy Cross Catholic Church (460 NW Washington Ave, Elkhart, IA) at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.
Chris was born in Mapleton, IA in 1948 to William (Bill) and Betty Cook and had one younger brother, Lawrence. In 1969, she married her college sweetheart, Lynn Schreurs, and together they had one daughter, Wendy (Larry) Hockensmith who gave them two wonderful grandchildren, Tyson and Kira.
Chris attended Mapleton High School where she excelled in basketball, making it to the Iowa State Basketball Tournament in her senior year. She went on to play college basketball at Wayne State College in Nebraska. In 1970, Chris and Lynn moved to Eddyville, IA to teach at Eddyville High School. After three years of teaching, they moved to Ankeny, IA where Lynn pursued a management career at John Deere and Chris continued her education career at DMACC, first as Assistant Registrar and then as the Wellness Director, retiring in 2002.
Chris was a spirited and exacting personality who enjoyed lifelong friendships and professional admiration. Chris's life was centered around the three F's - faith, family and friends. She loved to do good things for people and welcomed them into her family. She enjoyed watching football and basketball games (especially if the Iowa Hawkeyes or Notre Dame were playing). Chris also loved spoiling her grandchildren, spending time with her family and her Holy Cross church family, holiday dinners, shopping, gift giving, buying shoes, dining and dancing, a good joke or prank, and traveling (especially coastal Maine and New England in the Fall). She enjoyed visiting historical places, reading books and always trying to make someone's life better. Chris was an early riser and went hard all day to accomplish her never-ending list of things to do for others.
Chris is survived by her husband of 56 years, Lynn, and daughter Wendy (Larry) Hockensmith; two grandchildren, Tyson and Kira Hockensmith; her aunt Nancy Myers of Grand Junction, CO; two brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law, many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. Chris is preceded in death by her parents and her brother.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Wesley Life Caregivers who provided Chris's loving care over the last several years.
