Dana D. Leming passed away on Saturday, January 14 at Franciscan Health after a long battle with an illness. She was surrounded by loved ones during her passing. She was born in Lafayette, IN on April 19, 1964 to Betty and Willis Slaughterbeck. Dana was preceded in death by both of her parents and former partner Jeffrey Edwards.
Dana is survived and missed by her five children, Amber Slaughterbeck, Damien Leming, Emily Proctor (James Berkshire), Katie Leming (Jacob McDorman), and Samuel Leming, and her former spouse, Alan Leming. Also surviving are her three grandchildren whom she adored, Star and Amie Berkshire (Emily and James) and Birdie Hudson (Amber).
She is also survived by eight siblings, Alice Slaughterbeck, Kandi Cadwallader, Maybelle Slaughterbeck, Edward Slaughterbeck, Tracie Pattengale, Charles Slaughterbeck, Kurt Slaughterbeck, and Marlayna Slaughterbeck, along with many nieces and nephews.
Many years ago, Dana worked for REM Indiana and The Indiana Veterans Home where she put her genuine compassion and care for others into action. She also held many other jobs that allowed her to put her creativity and enthusiasm to work. There was no other job she took more seriously than being an active and engaged mother who tended to her children closely, fostering imagination and a sense of wonder in everything they did together. She taught her children early on the importance of empathy, love, and kindness for others. She would often encourage her children, assuring them that their hard work would be rewarded with many blessings.
Dana was a truly loving, vibrant, and adventurous woman who was devoted to God and always held her family and friends close to her heart. She openly extended her generosity to anyone who needed it and had a way of knowing when someone was in need of an understanding ear or a good laugh. She never knew a stranger and, even in her illness, would offer up her sense of humor to those around her. Through all of life's hardships, she maintained her resilience.
In her earlier years, Dana was a talented roller skater with a big green thumb. She loved every flower in her garden. She enjoyed camping, bowling, hiking, taking spontaneous family trips to the beach, and anything that involved nature. Later in life, she loved to catch up with family members over a cup (or three) of coffee and a stack of Uno cards. She also enjoyed sketching, birdwatching, talking with her children and grandchildren, and reading the Bible.
Her absence will be tremendously felt by her children and the many people who loved her dearly. She has imparted a legacy of love and gratitude that she would be proud to know lives on in them every day.
A memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, January 26, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at Hippensteel Funeral Home with service to follow at 6:30 p.m.
The family asks for donations to be made in Dana's memory to Riley Children's Hospital and Mental Health America Wabash Valley Region.
