Interment will follow the service at Hope Lutheran Cemetery in Minneota.
Darrel Eugene Anderson was born on February 17, 1947, in Canby, to Kermit and Elsie Anderson. He graduated from Minneota High School and attended the University of MN Morris and South Dakota State University in Brookings to earn an Ag Business degree. On June 28, 1975, he married Anita Mattson at Hope Lutheran Church. He lived his entire life on the family farm north of Minneota.
Darrel dedicated his life to caring for the world around him. He raised sheep and was shepherd to thousands of lambs over the years. He loved to take kids out to the barn to feed the bottle lambs. He grew crops including corn, beans and baled alfalfa for his flock. He always had a dog by his side – like his Australian Shepard Benny for the last 13 years. Darrel passed on his love of farming to his son and grandsons. When he wasn't in the barn or field, he was tending to his many house plants, fish tank and bird feeders. And he was always quick to help his neighbors.
Darrel was baptized and confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church in Minneota. He sang in the church choir, was a member of the church council and volunteered at his children's Luther League events. He loved music and was a member of the Minneota Community Jazz Band for many years.
Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends. He never missed any activities that his kids or grandchildren were in. He enjoyed family vacations to see the beauty of Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii and Utah. He played countless card games, took the grandkids on Ranger rides, ate ice cream on leisurely pontoon rides, made annual trips to the state fair, savored cherry pie and Mountain Dew and relaxed with westerns and Murder She Wrote re-runs. He so appreciated calls and visits.
Darrel persevered through 8 years of lung disease and it never dampened his zest for life or sense of humor. Darrel will be most remembered for his kind, fun-loving nature. We are so grateful for all the people who cared for him – including his friends at the Canby "Spa" Hospital. He died suddenly on Thursday January 23rd, 2025.
He is survived by daughter Laurie (Greg) Castor of New Hope and son Scott Anderson (fiancé Kellie Knudson) of Taunton, granddaughters Ella and Rosie Castor, grandsons Carter and Logan Anderson. Also survived by sister Bev (Gene) Bies of Canby, and nieces Susan (Mike) Fairchild of Watertown, Allison (Corey) Nelson of Canby and Manda (Jake) Olsen of Marshall. He was preceded in death by his wife Anita Anderson.
Blessed be the memory of Darrel Anderson. Breathe free!!
