Roger Allen Fritz, 86, of
Colman, SD, passed away on Monday, October 27, 2025 at Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids, SD. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, October 31, 2025 at Colman-Egan High School in
Colman, SD. Family present visitation will take place on Thursday, October 30, 2025 at Colman Lutheran Church from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a prayer service starting at 7:00 PM.
Roger was born on December 14, 1938, in Sioux Falls, SD, to Glenn and Alberta Fritz. He grew up in Tea, SD, and graduated from Lennox High School in Lennox, SD, in 1956. He went on to attend South Dakota State University, graduating in 1960 with a Bachelor of Arts in Vocational Agriculture Education, and later earned a Master's Degree in School Administration.
On March 27, 1959, Roger married the love of his life, Judith K. Hoffman. Together they built a home filled with love, faith, and laughter in Colman-a busy, energetic, and sometimes chaotic household; so full of activity that finding a babysitter was often a challenge (ask around). They raised four children: Greg, Sue, Sandy, and Jeff.
Roger devoted 48 years to education at the Colman and Colman-Egan Schools. He began his career as a vocational agriculture teacher, later became the principal, and in 1966 began his long tenure as superintendent-a role he held for 42 years until his retirement at age 70. Roger was deeply supportive of his teachers and school staff, always recognizing their vital role in helping students succeed. His lifelong commitment to education and community was honored in 1998 when he was named Superintendent of the Year for the State of South Dakota. When he retired in 2008, the Colman-Egan Football Field was named "Fritz Field" in his honor.
In addition to his educational career, Roger served his country with honor in the United States Army Reserve. Through his military career, he received multiple honors for his service and retired with the rank of Colonel after serving as Commandant of the 5043 USAR School in Sioux Falls for six years.
Roger was a faithful member of Colman Lutheran Church and an active member of Colman Shaffer-Lellelid American Legion Post 278 for nearly four decades, serving as Post Commander for 25 years. He had a deep love for his community and for giving back to local veterans. He was the emcee of both the Memorial Day and Veteran's Day programs for many years and led the effort to construct the Colman Veteran's Memorial, which was dedicated in August of 2023. Roger was also involved with many boards, councils, and civic activities, serving as an engaged and committed citizen throughout his life. He was a very generous and giving person, quietly supporting numerous nonprofits and causes.
Roger had a deep love for the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, often enjoying these activities with family, colleagues, and friends. He was also an avid woodworker, creating beautiful custom projects for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren each Christmas. A lifelong learner, he enjoyed solving crossword puzzles daily.
He was a proud supporter of the SDSU Jackrabbits, rarely missing a football game as a longtime season ticket holder. Roger also loved motorcycle riding and attended the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally for 38 consecutive years, always riding his Honda Gold Wing, never a noisy Harley. He and Judy cherished their time together at their Black Hills' cabin during the warmer months and their Arizona home in the winter, enjoying time with family, friends, and the outdoors. Roger was a devoted supporter of all local sports and activities, encouraging his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and students throughout their lives.
Roger is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Judith; their four children: Greg Fritz (Ranae), Sue Hemmer (Steve), Sandy Schmidt (Dan), and Jeff Fritz (Michelle); 10 grandchildren: Amanda, Cody, John, Danielle, Tiffany, Tate, Carter, Adam, Jill, and Gina; 24 great-grandchildren; siblings: Arlene Klawiter (Rick), Elaine Mellegard (Kirby), and Rod Fritz (Mary); special sisters-in-law, Dawn Hoffman (Don) and JoAnn Hoffman; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by Annie Lynn Fritz (infant great-granddaughter); parents, Glenn and Alberta Fritz; and in-laws, Ernest and Cora Hoffman.
Roger will be remembered for his warmth, humor, integrity, generosity, and deep devotion to family, community, and country. His life of service, faith, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him.
