Lonnie Dean Croon passed away on Saturday, September 6 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota after a battle with cancer. He is survived by his mother, Rosetta Croon, brother-in-law, Tim McAthie (Lori), nephews Tyler McAthie (Regan) and Landon McAthie, great-nephew Palmer McAthie and great-nieces Sloan and Drew McAthie. He is proceeded in death by his father, Darrel Croon and sister, Lori McAthie.

Lonnie was born on June 27, 1956 in Flandreau, South Dakota. He lived his entire life in Colman, South Dakota, first at the family farm before moving into town. He graduated from Colman High School in 1974. He worked for many years as a custodian for the Colman-Egan School District and worked the last several years as a guard for T&R Electric.

Lonnie will be remembered as a kind and gentle soul who always had a smile (and maybe a slightly off-color joke) ready for everyone he saw. To his nephews, he was firmly considered a fun uncle, teaching both Tyler and Landon how to drive on the gravel roads around Colman and often taking them to movies and dirt track races when they were growing up.

He was a devoted son, caring for his mother Rosie until the onset of his illness and a beloved great-uncle, who always showed up with little gifts and candy for the kids.

Lonnie had a deep love for his community and showed it by serving in the Colman Fire Department for 48 years. He was extremely proud to fulfill his duties to the fire department and did so until he was no longer physically able.

He is also a lifelong member of the Colman Lutheran Church, often performing the role of usher.

Lonnie enjoyed the simple things, like visiting with family and friends, playing cards, picking asparagus, and having a couple cold ones. Those who knew him best will remember him as grounded and optimistic; someone who could savor the little things and let go of the rest. He was a model for all in how to be content with a humble, yet full life as he spent all of his carrying an easy smile and an open heart.

Visitation for Lonnie will be held at the Skroch Funeral Chapel in Colman on Tuesday, September 9, 2025 from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services will be at Colman Lutheran Church on Wednesday, September 10, 2025 at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Lonnie's name to the Colman Fire Department.
