The first week the Circus started, my office became the closet turned office next to Betty. It was intimidating. People would be standing in a long line just to see her. I had no idea why. It wasn't always for business, but sometimes it was. Most of the time it wasn't. I came to understand that she had this amazing way of making you feel like you were the person she most wanted to talk to at that moment and that you were important to her.
She was FEARLESS. She was BOLD. She LOVED DEEPLY, and if you were someone she loved, you KNEW it. She never stepped away from what she believed was right. And the reason there were always so many people in line to see her? Because, as I came to know, there was never enough time to spend with her. EVER. 5 minutes or 5 hours wasn't enough to be in her presence. I LOVED Betty. And I have beautiful symbols of her all around MY studio, which she told me I should have (she was right). She was encouraging, funny, and fierce about what she believed in. (She also listened to great music, which I really appreciated.) Being next door for almost 9 years was a gift that I have thought of thousands of times with a smile. There is a great party going on up in heaven; I have no doubt Betty is in the middle of it dancing.
