Jerome Eischens Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 13, 2017.
Jerome M. (Jerry) Eischens passed away on March 13, 2017, in his home in Los Gatos, CA. He leaves behind 2 children, Shauna and Paul, and 6 grandchildren - all of whom fondly remember Grandpa's famous pancake breakfasts and exciting (bordering on harrowing) mountain rides with him on his ATVs. Jerry was born May 6, 1935, one of a dozen Eischens children born in Park Rapids, MN. He met and married Carolyn Gee in 1960, and they moved to Sunnyvale, California where they soon became parents and started their careers. Jerry worked for Westinghouse Electric where he became a master welder. After 17 years there, Jerry and a coworker started their own welding and fabrication business, EMWELD, based in the Los Gatos mountains. He built his family's dream house right next door to the business shop, facilitating Jerry's constant work ethic and love of the mountains. Even after Jerry and Carolyn split in the late '80s, and through Jerry's second marriage to Jean Arnold (who passed away 2 years later), Jerry remained at his mountain bachelor pad. There was always a constant stream of friends and family that would stop in to visit Jerry, have a beer, get an earful on his current welding project, and fix whatever mechanical ailment they might have had. Over the years, Jerry had a pack-rat –like collection of tools, trucks, tractors and metal so anything was possible, and there was always something going on in the shop. Jerry's very infrequent vacations away from his work were mostly spent with his brothers hunting or fishing, with just a few tourist trips to Europe, Vegas, the Far East, and Mexico. Whenever he was away from home, though, he was always anxious to return home and sit next to a big, roaring fire made from mountain timber he gathered and split himself. Jerry's memory will live in our hearts forever as we re-imagine the night stars as a giant spray of sparks from his arc welder in the heavens.

Jerry is what every man should be: hard working, self determined, ambitious, family oriented, kind and generous. I met Jerry through my house cleaning business. He called looking for a cleaning company. My girlfriend and I drove all the way out to his house and realized he lives too far out for our company. After meeting Jerry, I let him know his house is too far out for us. He invited us to sit down and have a beer. Thirty minutes later, we were under his employment for the next ten years. What a guy!!!!! little did I know he would present me with my first welder and teach me how to weld. I bought a house with 5 acres and Jerry coached me project after project. As i built trailers, Jerry was my master engineer. Every other Monday for 10 years, I would look forward to driving my cleaning crew to Jerrys place. The crew loved the scenic drive, and i enjoyed seeing Jerrys new jobs or projects. Its been a few years since I've seen Jerry, but every time i fire up the welder I think about him taking time to teach me how to weld. I always knew he has plenty relatives and a lot of friends, but every other Monday used to be "my time with Jerry". THANK YOU Jerry for your expertise, time, friendship, and kindness. Thank you for being Jerry. By the way, the first meeting with Jerry he invited us to have a beer. I am not a beer drinker, but something told me to sit down and have a cold one with this guy. And I am glad I did.

The day I met you my education began in welding, but more importantly, the value of a true friend. You're cherished and forever loved.

Dad, we all miss you so much. Our family has a hole that only you can fill. Each time I enjoy a glass of wine, I picture you and I out on the deck and sharing a glass or two together. Cheers to you, dad. I miss you more each day. Until we meet again, please say hi to my parents and Bandit Jerome for me! I love you forever!

When I think of Jerry all I can do is smile. He was such a character, fully into his never-ending projects and enjoyment of the journey of life.

I have so many wonderful memories, but one of the more symbolic ones is when he introduced Shauna and me to the home PC. It was back in high school, and he had a very utilitarian-looking, early version of a machine, likely from HP. He tapped at the keys and green letters and numbers scrolled across the screen faster than anyone could read them. He was thrilled with the possibilities! Shauna and I were less so. We figuratively rolled our eyes and went back to her room to listen to music and talk about boys. :)

Jerry had a loving and generous spirit, and I am blessed to have shared in his time here on Earth.

Much love and encouragement to all the family and friends who feel his loss so deeply,

My Uncle Jerry was the best. Always a kind smile. ready to give a lending hand and take time out of his always busy day to sit and share a beer or glass of wine with you. He liked to remind me that when I was still in diapers he would have to chase me around the house in order to change them. Apparently I led him on some wild chases. Good times(haha). He was such an excellent mechanic always taking the time to come to our rescue and fix our car problems. We always said he had the magic touch. Case in point: we had a family car that developed starting problems and other issues-fast forward to Uncle Jerry coming over to take a look under the hood...all he did was place his hand on the hood, told my Dad to try to start it and voila the car started!!! We are still baffled to this day!
When we were young kids we used to go to the Sunnyvale companies empty parking lots and race around in the little go-cart that he built. We have old home movies of my brother Ron, me, my Dad Denny, and cousin Paul J riding around in it. It was great fun!! I miss that little go-cart. When he moved to Los Gatos we advanced to the ATVs. I rode on the back with Uncle Jerry and was terrified going up the hills but it was so thrilling!!
Most of all I will miss sharing a beer or glass of wine with you Uncle Jerry, sitting by the fire, watching some sports game with you and just sharing stories and love. Cheers Uncle Jerry! I love you so much. Say hello to Mom and all who have gone before you. Until we meet again....

I didn't know Jerry well but I was dazzled time and again by the wonderful creations he made in his shop for Shauna. They were crepative, beautiful, useful and clearly a labor of love. In addition to the stars from his arc welder in the sky, Shauna and the girls will have daily reminders of Jerry's love in his beautiful metal creations.
