John Martinez, 94, died August 28, 2023, at his home in Goddard. He was born June 12, 1929, in Hutchinson, to Luis and Pevia (Magana) Martinez.
John graduated from Hutchinson High School and served in the United States Marine Corps and United States Army. He continued serving his country by joining the Army National Guard, retiring as a Captain. John also worked as an associate office coordinator for the United States Postal Service, retiring after 40 years of service. He enjoyed collecting tools, working in his yard, and keeping busy. John's faith was very important to him. He grew up in St. Teresa Catholic Church, Hutchinson, and was currently a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, Schulte. John was a life-long member of the Knights of Columbus.
On June 20, 1981, he married Shirley Bishop, in Norwich.
John is survived by: his wife of 42 years, Shirley Martinez; children, John David Martinez, Ruth Annette Meek (Mark), Sandra Lynn Bell (Bill), Gary Drake Martinez, Donita Bunke (Jim), Rick Dolley (Gina), Mike Dolley, Robert Dolley (Kelly), and Brent Dolley (Christina); sister, Lucille Vieyra; special nephew, Christopher Vieyra; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Jack, Joe, Luis, and Margaret.
Parish Rosary will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 13, 2023, with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 a.m., both at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 612 S. Maple, South Hutchnson, with Father Eric M Weldon officiating. Inurnment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson. Cremation has taken place. Friends may sign his book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Lucky Dogs, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
