Kathleen V. McGrath, 91, died Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at her home in Burlington.
Kathleen was born in Northborough, MA on December 3, 1930 the youngest of nine children. Her parents were William E. and Annie E. (White) McGrath. The family came to their father's birthplace, Vermont, when she was one and a half years old.
Kathleen graduated from Cathedral High School in 1948, and attended the School of Practical Art in Boston, MA. She also attended the Shelburne Craft School art classes taught by Stowe artist Stanley Marc Wright.
She worked in the family grocery store for several years and was the first cashier at Valde's Cafeteria in downtown Burlington before deciding to paint full time. Kathleen specialized in local scenes and colorful Vermont landscapes in a realistic style. Her work can be found in many area homes and in her great nephews' restaurants. Late in her career, Kathleen took on the challenge of doing portrait work, completing portraits of many family members. Her portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Pomerleau hang in the Burlington Police Department.
She exhibited her paintings at the Chittenden Bank, the Fletcher Free Library, and the McCarthy Arts Center at St, Michael's College, as well as many other locations. Kathleen was a long-time member of the Northern Vermont Artists and Burlington City Arts.
Kathleen enjoyed biking the Burlington Bike Path, gardening, and cooking. She wrote and illustrated a cookie cookbook that family and friends found useful and fun, Her Whoopie Pies were in great demand and regularly sold out in minutes in her nephew's restaurant.
Kathleen is survived by her nephews Michael, Robert, Timothy, Terrance, Stephen, John, and Gary McGrath; William Moulton, and Jack and Thomas Krouskroup; and by her niece Sally McGrath. She is also survived by several great nieces and nephews, including Sean, Brendan, William Owen, Keelin Simpson, and Bridget Santos who have been steadfast supporters of her artistic work. Kathleen was predeceased by her brothers, William, John, Leonard, and Edward; her sisters, Eileen, Marge, Winifred, and Mary, and by her nephews James Krouskroup and Edward McGrath, Jr.
The family wishes to thank her dedicated team of caregivers, Amber, Catherine, Maureen and Anahi. Due to their loving care and attention, Kathleen realized her wish to spend her final days at home. Thanks also go out to the Hospice Care Team at The UVM Health Network, who did much to ease Kathleen's final days.
At her request, there will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at 1:00pm at Resurrection Park Cemetery, So. Burlington. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to your favorite charity.
