Obituary
Kathryn Beatrice Drexler (Fitzgerald) passed away peacefully early Monday morning, July 3, 2023 to be in the arms of her Heavenly Father and reunited with her beloved Albert Drexler.
Kathryn was born on October 13, 1935 in
Wooster, Ohio to Edward and Bridget "Delia" Fitzgerald. She lived on a farm and attended a one-room schoolhouse. She graduated from Northwestern High School in 1953.
Both Albert and Kathryn had sisters who were nuns, Sister Albert Drexler O.P., and Sister Beatrice Fitzgerald, O.P. It was at a veiling ceremony for each of their sisters that they met, fell in love, got married, and moved to Akron.
"Aunt Kate" loved being a part of the Drexler family that she had married into, and cherished spending time with each and every one of them, keeping up with all of the details of their lives. As a young wife and mother, they would gather to play cards, especially euchre. She was in a bowling league with her husband, and each one had a custom bowling ball. In 1998, she took "the trip of a lifetime" to Ireland to visit her family, see the sites, and eat the delicious food. She was a fabulous cook and would feed anyone and everyone who entered her door. Even if you told her you were full, she would add another spoonful to your plate.
Kathryn was the youngest of three sisters, and they loved each other fiercely, faithfully, and loyally. After an illness, her sister Mary lived with her until her passing, and Sister Bea would visit them both weekly until hers.
Anyone in her presence was treated like family. She had a softness that was only matched by her quiet and determined strength. Having been widowed at a young age, she held onto her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren tight. Not a holiday or special occasion went by without a card in the mailbox from her. Kathryn got her hair done weekly and made lifelong friends with her hair stylists. She enjoyed scratch-off lottery tickets and watching Hallmark Christmas movies, "because they always have a happy ending."
Kathryn is survived by two children, Linda Benko and her husband Brad, of
Canton, OH, and Albert Drexler and his wife Susan, of
Central, SC; grandchildren, Brenden Benko and his wife, Mandy, Brett Benko, Brook Benko and her husband, Christopher Muller, Albert Drexler and his wife, Heather, Jessica Drexler and her husband, Terrence, Bridgette Savran and her husband, Hasan, and Sarah Drexler Six; great grandchildren Adelle Boyd, Cinema Muller, Raevyn Reese, Alec, Annaliese, and Avery Savran, Ava-Rae and Charlie Six; step great grandchildren Cassandra Muller, and her husband Zendell, Madeline and Julianna Muller, step great-great grandchild, Orion Muller, and several godchildren. In addition to her parents, Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, Albert in 1977, as well as her sisters Mary Fitzgerald and Sr. Beatrice Fitzgerald O.P. in 2014.
The family wishes to express their eternal gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff on the 5th floor palliative care and oncology ward at Cleveland Clinic Akron General for their compassionate care and expertise.
The family will receive friends Thursday, July 13, 2023 from 4 to 7pm at the Anthony Funeral Home of Akron, 1990 S. Main St. Akron OH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, July 14, 2023 at 11:00 am at St. Paul Catholic Church, 1580 Brown St., Akron OH 44301. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.
