MILTON--- Loretta Check, age 79, of Milton, died on Friday, April 9, 2010, at Mercy Hospital. She was born into a family of 4 sisters and 4 brothers in Prairie du Chien on April 29, 1930, the daughter of Aloysius and Anna (McNamara) Gillitzer. She graduated from Prairie High School, Prairie du Chien and before her marriage had worked as a telephone operator in Prairie du Chien. Loretta married Thomas M. Check in St. John's Catholic Church, Prairie du Chien on Oct. 15, 1951, and had been a Milton and Janesville area resident for over 50 years. She had been employed by Mercy Hospital as an OR Tech for 27 years, and enjoyed traveling with her husband during their retirement to places such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland and many places throughout the United States. Loretta enjoyed having her family around and the great joys of her life were her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Janesville and the Kiwanis Club of Milton. Loretta enjoyed crocheting, cooking, and making beaded Christmas ornaments. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Thomas Check; 2 sons, Paul (Phyllis) Check of LaCrosse and James (Mary) Check of Milton; 6 grandchildren: Eric (Dana) of LaCrosse, Krystal (Adam) Peterson of Rochester, MN, Travis of LaCrosse, Carmen (Clint) Montgomery of Argyle, WI, Evan and Ellen both of Milton; 4 great grandchildren: Bradley, Owen and Thomas of LaCrosse and Brooklyn of Rochester, MN; and 5 siblings: Rita Lester of Prairie du Chien, Eugene (Mary) Gillitzer of Prairie du Chien, Catherine (Richard) McGrath of Madison, John (Norma) Gillitzer of Prairie du Chien and Roger (Janice) Gillitzer of Janesville. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bernard Gillitzer; and 2 sisters, Agnes Gillitzer and Anna Marie Lathrop. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, Janesville with Rev. Stephen J. Umhoefer officiating. Entombment will be in Mt. Olivet Mausoleum. A visitation will be held on Monday from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME. The family would like to thank the Oncology Dept. of Dean Riverview Clinic, Mercy Hospital and a special thank you to HospiceCare, Inc.
