Mary Elizabeth Bond McKelvy was born to the late Mr. Carrie Bond, Sr. and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Hicks Bond on December 3, 1944 in Gibson County, Tennessee.
She was later raised in Jackson, Tennessee by her late aunt and uncle Mrs. Lucy Neal Bond Anthony and Mr. Conrad Anthony after the passing of her birth mother. Mary was the youngest of seven children.
Mary accepted Christ at Macedonia Baptist Church in Jackson, TN, where she was in the choir as a youth, young adult and adult. She was also active in many other church activities.
Mary graduated from Merry High School and went on to matriculate at Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee. She participated in several extracurricular activities at Lane College while pursuing a teaching degree. She was Miss Dragonette in 1963, a member of the French and English Club, choir and band. In 1964, she joined Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. in the Alpha Gamma Chapter. Mary was also crowned as Miss Lane College in 1965.While attending Lane College, Mary met her late husband Ronald McKelvy, Sr.
After graduating Lane College, Mary became a teacher where she taught high school, elementary school and college. Hamilton High School in Memphis, TN and Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama just to mention. After the passing of her husband, she returned to Jackson, Tennessee, where she was a substitute teacher in Madison and Dyer County School Systems until she retired.
She was preceded in death by her sister Mora Lee Hicks Donald, and brothers KC Hicks, Carrie Bond, Jr., Robert Bond, and Frazell Bond.
To cherish her memory, Mary is survived by her four children: Ronald Jr. (Janice), Carol, Anthony (Vonda), and Elisa (Cory); grandchildren:Tristan, Astin, Karl, Jr., Philip, Sr., Alexis, Briana, Coryn, Mahri, and Selah; great grandchildren: Xavier, Philip, Jr., Ja'Myah, Love, Kristiana, Skylan, and Niya; brother: Lonell Bond;
brother-in-law and sister-in-law Edward and Dorothy McKelvy and a host of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, great grand-nieces and great grand-nephews.
