R. Thomas Green Jr.

Robert Thomas Green Jr., age 86, passed away peacefully on Wednesday October 18, 2023. Tom was born in 1937, the eldest son of Shelby-residents Ruth & Bob Green (deceased) and leaves to cherish his memory, his siblings - Skip, Jeff, and Judy - his wife of 59 years, Gretchen, four children - Wendy, Bob, Kate, and Greta - and seven grandchildren. You may recognize the Shelby antique fire truck that Tom owned. He had a passion for fire trucks and often drove the truck in the Memorial Day parade and around town in Hudson.

Tom attended boarding school at Western Reserve Academy in Hudson (Class of '55) and graduated from Amherst College '59, where he was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity.

After college, Tom met and married his love, Gretchen, began his business career in sales and marketing at US Steel, and started a family. In 1965, he joined Cleveland-based mining and shipping company Oglebay Norton, living in both Zanesville and Hudson, Ohio over his 36 years with the company. He advanced his career to ultimately take the helm as president and CEO before retiring in 1999.

When Tom Green retired, he was really just getting started with his life's work. Tom committed himself to the service of others focusing on advancing education and supporting the Episcopal church. He served in numerous leadership roles and Board of Trustees such as the Episcopal Preaching Foundation and Hiram College.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Church Episcopal (Hudson, Ohio) on Fri, Nov 17th at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Episcopal Preaching Foundation or in support of Tom Green's nephew, Phil Decker's foundation Tell5Friends.org, sharing Phil's story that cancer screening saves lives.
