Raymond Brodie Obituary

BRODIE, Raymond L., loving husband to Melba R. Brodie for 58 years; and father of two children, Helayne G. Sweet, and George H. Brodie, died in his home on Saturday, June 14, 2008 surrounded by his family. He was born February 25, 1925. He was a World War II Veteran, landing on the beaches of Omaha just five days after D-Day. He was honorably discharged in 1945 as a Private First Class in the Army's 57th Chemical Maintenance Company. Following his service, he attended Pennsylvania State University, where he was a proud graduate of the Class of 1948, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Later, he received a Masters Degree from Temple University in Public Speaking. The Department of Veterans Benefits for the Veterans Administration hired him in the late 1950s, where he received an Outstanding Career Award and a Distinguished Career Award for his efficiency, integrity, dedication, and loyalty to the Federal Civil Service for 32 years. He retired in 1987, and made his home with his wife in Midlothian, Virginia. He was a volunteer at the VA Hospital and a generous contributor to multiple charities. He was an avid tennis player and golfer - with two Holes In One. He enjoyed spending his time with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Melba; and his two children and their families, George Brodie, his wife, Judy; and their two children, Gavin and Honor; and his daughter, Helayne Sweet, her husband, David; and their two children, Jim and Jessica. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 17, 11 a.m. at Woody's Funeral Home in Midlothian, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Bon Secours Hospice & Palliative Care, 8580 Magellan Parkway, Richmond, Virginia 23227.
