Robert Phelan Obituary

Born in Newark, NJ, he was the son of the late Joseph Phelan and Anna Tighe Phelan. Robert served in the Army's 61st Infantry. Following a tour in Vietnam, he was discharged with 'Honor' and decorated with the Bronze Service Medal. He returned home to a successful sales career with Castrol Oil. He and his wife, the late Joan Y. Phelan eventually retired to Pawleys Island where they became parishioners of Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church. Robert was also an active member of the Pawleys Island Golf Community where he was affectionately known as the "Warrior".
In addition to his parents and his wife Joan, Robert was predeceased by a grandchild, Kelsey Faith Panaccione, his sisters: Jeanne (Phelan) Moran, Mary Ellen (Phelan) Dominick; his brothers: Joseph Phelan and James Phelan.
He is survived by his brother, Thomas Phelan of Las Vegas, Nevada.
He is also survived by his children: Melanie (Phelan) Giordano and her husband Robert of Oak Ridge, NJ, Heather (Phelan) Vaccaro and her husband Nick of Wayne, NJ, Jennifer (Phelan) Wells and her husband Stephen of Lake Worth, FL, Michael Adams of Urbandale, IA, Sandy Adams of Myrtle Beach, SC, Julie Panaccione and her husband James of Blufton, SC; 16 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Mass of the Christian Burial will take place at Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church at a future date to be announced.
Memorial contributions may be made in Robert's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis TN 38101-9908.
Goldfinch Funeral Home, Pawleys Litchfield Chapel is assisting the family.
