Smithfield – Roy Gene Gilmore, age 83, passed away peacefully Tuesday June 11, 2024 at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield. He was born in Johnston County on November 9, 1940 to the late Headley Baker Gilmore and Kitty Moore Gilmore. In addition to his father and mother, he is also preceded in death by a sister, Elvie Gilmore Jones; brothers, Terry Gilmore,Lavon Gilmore, Jerry Gilmore; son in law, Rod Edwards.
The family will receive visitors at Parrish Funeral Home on Saturday June 15, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. A funeral service will follow the visitation on Saturday at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow the service in Knollwood Memorial Park in Clayton.
Mr. Gilmore is survived by his wife of 63 years, Martha Harper Gilmore; sons, Rodney Gilmore and wife Jennifer of Smithfield, Roger Gilmore and wife Donna of Smithfield; daughter, Beth Edwards of Clayton; sister, Loretta Strickland of Willow Springs; grandchildren, Russell Edwards and wife Trina of Smithfield, Chase Gilmore and wife Amber of California, Wesley Gilmore and wife Monica of Colorado, Brenna Furr and husband Lawson of Texas, Brandon Edwards of Clayton, Bryan Gilmore of Colorado; great grandchildren, Logan and Luke Gilmore of Colorado.
Gene was a master mechanic and taught his boys and grandchildren the tools of the trade. He retired from Johnston County and Town of Smithfield after many years of service as a mechanic. After retirement in 2002, he worked for many years with his family at Harpers Flea Market (Gilmores Tools and Whatever). Everyone visited his home garage, especially his grandchildren. This became known as "Dad's Fix It Shop." He was loved by many friends and family members and will be missed. He was also well known for his famous BBQ sauce known by many as "CHUBS CHICKEN." Gene was a family man who would do anything for anyone, he was a past governor of the Loyal Order of the Smithfield Moose for many years and a member of the Smithfield Lions Club.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the SECU Hospice House. Donations can be sent to Johnston Health Foundation PO Box 1376 Smithfield, NC 27577 Attn: Hospice Fund.
