My dear friends, I just found out and I am very saddened. Roy was part of my wedding party in 1982. We also went together to Abraham Lincoln HS and graduated a year apart (72 vs 73). I knew his family, and I also knew of his brother's demise earlier (Robert Greenberg). We both were chess players.
I am so sorry not to be with him for many years. I am sobbing, but we had so many memories together. If you wish to get in touch with me as I have unanswered questions. I am Alex Draifinger, 215-8346861.
May God bless him.

I first met Roy Greenberg at Shell Bank Jr. High School (Brooklyn, NY) in the mid 1960's. He founded a chess club there. For 2 years we represented our school by competing in numerous USCF tournaments. Roy was a natural and eventually achieved the title of "Life Master" in chess. After junior high school we went our separate ways.
Then in 1994 I was looking to get back into chess. One Sunday afternoon I went to Elmwood Park Chess Club (another chess club founded by Roy). The first person I see when I walked into the club was Roy Greenberg. Roy was a wonderful ambassador for chess.
We have been very good friends from that day on.
We saw World Chess Champion Gary Kasparov at Downtown Athletic Club. We saw World Chess Champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov at ABC building in Times Square. We enjoyed going to Philadelphia, Parsippany, Stroudsburg, PA, and NYC to compete and observe chess tournaments.
In addition to chess we enjoyed playing tennis and eating pizza.
Roy had other interest besides chess. He enjoyed science fiction, ping pong, pickle ball, and was very good at scrabble.
I will miss my good friend Roy Greenberg.
