Ruth Elizabeth Casteel, 94, of Pineville, passed away at her residence Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010. Born Dec. 22, 1915, in Graham, Va., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Willie Harrison Criner. Ruth opened Wyoming County’s first flower shop in 1948, “Pineville Flower Shop.� She was a charter member of the Pineville Presbyterian Church, past president of the Pineville Women’s Club, and was member of Eastern Star, Pineville Lioness Club and the Pineville Homemakers Club. She will always be remembered as outgoing and vivacious. She loved people and traveling. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Opie Casteel, and a grandson, Scott Taylor. Survivors include two daughters, Nita Deskins and her husband, Aaron, of Muskegon, Mich., and Joy Taylor and her husband, Kyle, of Kalamazoo, Mich.; a son, Jack Casteel and his wife, Peggy, of Pineville; eight grandchildren, Teri Deskins of Palm Beach, Fla., Mike Taylor of Parchment, Mich., Judy Allen of Paraiso, Calif., Joe Deskins of Michigan, Jack Casteel Jr. of Pineville, Ann Russell of Wichita Falls, Texas, Jill Hendrick of Beckley and Lisa Arends of Naperville, Ill.; 12 great-grandchildren, Jenna and Evan Casteel, Jason and Steven Taylor, Christopher Ewing, Eli and Jake Hendrick, Amanda, Billy and Matthew Arends, and Cody and Ashley Russell; a great-great-grandson, Alex Casteel; and her little dog, Buddy. Special thanks to her faithful caregivers, Vivian Church, Linda Stewart, Juanita Thompson and Angie Cline. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ruth’s name to the Pineville Presbyterian Church, PO Box 493, Pineville, WV 24874-0493.
