Stephen Charles Plichta Sr. passed away Wednesday, December 13th near his home in Prospect Heights, IL with his wife and sons by his side after a multi-year battle with Alzheimer's disease. Steve was born January 3, 1939 in Muskegon, Michigan. He was 84 years old.
As a young man, he became a formidable competitor in several Golden Gloves boxing tournaments. Although articles sometimes referred to him as the "Muskegon Mauler", whose opponents would "succumb to the pummeling of his gloves", he was gentle and kind to whomever he encountered outside of the ring. He went on to serve in the US Army and continued to box. After the Army, he attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago. He leveraged his considerable artistic talent for the rest of his life as a successful commercial and fine artist.
Steve is survived by his wife Jacqueline, sons Stephen (Tina) Plichta Jr and Michael (Lisa) Plichta, brothers Jim and John, sister Margaret, grandchildren Elena, Sonya, Joshua, Cole, Zachary, Jimmy, Linnea, and Cyris, stepson Jim (Kris) Somerville, stepdaughter Shari Somerville, and many nieces and nephews.
His passing is preceded by his parents Stephen Frank Plichta and Margaret Louise Plichta (Vogt), previous wife LaVerne, brother Charles, and sisters Charlotte, Myrna, and Carol.
Family, friends, and others whose lives were touched by Steve are invited to MATZ MT. PROSPECT FUNERAL CHAPEL 410 E. Rand Rd, Mt. Prospect IL 60056, from 9:30 am - 12:00 pm, Saturday December 16, 2023 to reminisce, laugh, grieve and support each other.
Steve 'Sonny' Plichta lives on in the hearts and minds of his loving family and friends.

Uncle Sonny was such a sweet, funny, talented man. He always made you feel loved. I loved listening to his stories, he cracked me up. He will be missed dearly.

Steve or Sonny as I have known him. A great brother so talented, we had a wonderful family in Muskegon MI. Sonny has a wonderful family his son's Mickey and Steven I love them so much and so proud of each and everyone. I am sad and a little broken to hear of his passing. However I am also glad he is with the family in Heaven. I was with Sonny when he gave his heart to Jesus. Remember the last breath we take on earth is the first breath we will take in Heaven. In a way I envy him I wish I could be there with them all. One day God will take me home. No more death no more sickness completely healed in every way. Praise God my Saviour and Lord.

Uncle Sonny was our Santa Claus when we were little. He was a very sweet loving Uncle and my sisters and I will miss him so much.
