Vi Corning Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Informed Choice Funeral & Cremation Alternatives - West Allis on Sep. 18, 2024.
Violet Rose Corning was born on May 18, 1927, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Freida and Ernest Tschantre. She passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2024, in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, at the age of 97. Vi was preceded in death by her husband Richard (Dick), her parents, and her sister Lorraine. She is survived by her three children: Barbara Corning (John Koeppen), Michael (LeeAnn) and John (Ann), five grandchildren: Eryn Hatchell (Ryan), Ryan Corning (Erica Pettke), Jason Corning, Jeni Corning, and Jake Corning (Caitlyn), and eight great grandchildren: Owen, Jocelyn, Allison, and Lauren Hatchell, Jackson, Alexandra, and Ada Rose Corning, and Zoey Violet Corning.
Vi and Dick were married on August 14, 1948, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where they later raised their children on the northwest side. They were married for 59 years before Dick passed away in 2008. Family was extremely important to them both. They prioritized time with their children and grandchildren above all else, whether it be watching their many sporting events, celebrating holidays, or relishing summers together in Manitowish Waters.
Her outgoing personality was a blessing to the many friends that she made across the country. She had lifelong friends from grade school and West Division high school, and she nurtured those relationships throughout the years. Shortly after her marriage to Dick, they met fellow newlyweds in their neighborhood and started the "Birthday Club". Vi was the last surviving member before passing away. Their home away from home was in Nokomis, Florida, where they spent the winters. They found easy joy in innumerable activities there; especially enjoying time at the pool & beach, card games, bingo, and bocce ball.
Vi lived life to the fullest. She enjoyed traveling with Dick to many places, from Asia to Europe to the Caribbean. She continued her travels after Dick passed, sometimes venturing alone. She enjoyed reading, watching the Brewers and Packers, going to the movies, and being outside, especially feeding and watching the birds. She loved to knit, and she made lap blankets for the residents at Alexian village, as well as afghans for many of her loved ones. She was a card shark and continued to dominate euchre and penny poker until the last game she played – all while ensuring strict adherence to the rules by all.
She had a fierce independent spirit and was driving her red Mercury Marquis and living in her own apartment until her short stay at Linden Grove before passing away. She wanted to thank all the special caregivers there – especially Danny, who was so kind and gentle with her.
Vi will be greatly missed by all who loved her, and her irreplaceable spirit will be remembered by all who knew her.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, N88W17658 Christman Road, Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Service at 12:00 PM. Interment on Monday, September 23, 2024, at Pinelawn Memorial Park, 10700 Capitol Drive, Milwaukee, Wisconsin at 11:00 AM.
