Wesley C. Hines, widely known and loved as Wes, passed away on November 15, 2023. Born on February 1, 1956, in Ithaca, NY to the late William G. and Alice (Curtis) Hines, Wes lived a life characterized by his adventurous spirit, and his handy skills.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Sarah, his children Rosie and Wesley Jr., and was predeceased by his son Broderick "Brody" Hines earlier in the year. He was a dear brother to George (Edie) Hines, Fred Hines, Joel (Sondra) Hines, and the late Raymond Hines and Edna Frank. Wes also held a special place in his heart for his cousin, Merton Hines, Jr., and his family. Wes spent a lot of time with his cousin Mert, his children and grandchildren. He always greeted them with his intoxicating smile and laughter. They'd play and laugh and never wanted him to leave but when he did, the hugs and high fives were all that mattered. In his final days he did just that. He will also be remembered by Sarah's extended family along with many treasured nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Wes was a proud graduate of Newark Valley High School, class of 1976. He dedicated thirty years of his life to Cornell University, serving as a building guard at the Teaching and Research Center in Dryden. Wes was a man of many interests and talents. He was an avid outdoorsman who relished in the tranquility of hunting and fishing. A true jack of all trades, Wes also found immense pleasure in woodworking and was always ready to lend a hand in fixing anything, from electrical issues to engine problems. His family and friends often marveled at his ability to turn his hand to any task and admired his adventurous spirit.
Wes bravely battled with mental health issues and depression throughout his life. His family hopes that his story will encourage others who are struggling to seek help and support. They recommend the Face It Foundation, (www.faceitfoundation.org) an organization dedicated to men's mental health, as a resource for those in need. In the face of his struggles, Wes' friendly nature and handy skills never wavered. He is remembered for his laughter and his unyielding strength.
Family and friends are invited to attend a period of visitation on Saturday, December 9th from 11 – 1 pm at the MacPherson Funeral Home, 5 Whig St., Newark Valley. A celebration of his life will be held in the summer at Wes' favorite spot up on the Hines Hill. We ask that you gather those memories and stories so we can share them around the bon fire and have a summertime cookout. Wes will be laid to rest, next to his son Brody in the Hope Cemetery. Memories and condolences may be shared by visiting his guestbook at www.macphersonfh.com
Wes' passing leaves a void in the hearts of his loved ones and the community that will be hard to fill. His memory will continue to inspire all who knew him to live life with courage, kindness, and a spirit of adventure. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
