It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of our beloved Yary, on Tuesday, January 23, 2024. She passed away peacefully in her home, with all those who loved her around her.
Yary was a 6th Grade student at the B. F. Butler Middle School in Lowell, where she was an Honor Roll Student her last quarter. She loved music, especially Taylor Swift and Karol G. Yary liked to play video games and loved Stitch. She was the strongest girl, who always had a smile that showcased her remarkable dimples. Yary was an inspiration.
Yary aspired to be a peidatric surgeon due to the incredible care she received.
As Yary's physician, Dr. Lauren Jimenez-Kurlander so eloquently stated to her mother in a personal and heartfelt message, "Yary was a truly remarkable 12 year old girl, with extraordinary courage, resilience, and grace.
Yary was diagnosed with metastatic soft tissue sarcoma in January of 2022 and completed her initial treatment in August of 2022. She had 9 months without disease before she relapsed and bravely trialed multiple lines of therapy before she and her mother, Jennifer made the courageous decision to stop all cancer-directed therapy in October of 2023.
Yary had a unique charisma that drew everyone in with a radiant smile that lit up the room. She was the kind of patient that everyone was excited to see. Throughout her care, and most markedly after her relapse, Yary was an embodiment of strength, perhaps the toughest patient her doctor has had the privilege to care for. Her intelligence and thoughtfulness beyond her years manifested with overthinking and worries about some aspects of her treatment; yet, no matter her worries, she and her mother, Jennifer always responded to every unimaginable hurdle with their mantra, "We got this."
Yary had an appreciation for worrying for others rather than herself and a maturity beyond her years. Her primary goal was to honor her mother and four siblings in the time she had left. Yary lived longer than we thought possible-living through her 12th Birthday and having a beautiful Stitch themed party that she fondly remembered as the best day of her life. She found ways to take trips with her family, including Disney World, Puerto Rico, NYC, and more locally Boston after her disease progressed.
We will remember her love for Stitch and Taylor Swift, stylish nails and fashion advice, and lesser-known passion for history (on her trip to NYC she even looked most forward to seeing the World Trade Center).
Her mother, Jennifer's selfless dedication to honor her wishes and help her pass at home was deeply inspiring – Yary and her family are a family that reminds us all why we go into pediatric oncology in the first place. Yary impacted and inspired so many; she knew and was proud of that and her loss leaves a profound void in our world. "
Thank you all for the incredible care of Yary.
Thank you, Dr. Lauren Jimenez-Kurlander for this beautiful tribute to our amazing girl.
Yarielix is survived by her mother, Jennifer Alba; her siblings, Jureilis Carmona, Leeah Diaz, Mikaela Diaz, and Adalyriel Diaz; her grandparents Elbi Alba, Sr., Looreilis Tavarez; her step-grandmother, Diane Rogers; her Godmother, Dayan Vazquez; her uncle, Elbi Alba, Jr.; her aunts Stephanie Santiago, Nelly Alba, and Daniela Alba; also many dear friends and people who loved her.
