Tony was an old friend. I had known him for over a quarter century. I had first met him at the lunch volleyball game at Univ Illinois UC. He was larger than life, spoke his mind honestly, and was very nice. What does very nice mean? In the late 80s, volleyball was a big deal at UofI and there were tiers of groups and players. Most of the time, the players in a higher tier would not play pickup games with other tiers. Tony was one of the few players from the upper tiers who would join the lower tier games enthusiastically. And when he had played with you a few times, he would see you and ask you to play with him. He was always looking to help the less experienced players get better and really committed to volleyball teams, whether it was at an intramural level, a district level or even USAV (USA Volleyball) championships. Once you met him, I would say that you would remember him for a decade after - he was that interesting.
I had the privilege of playing with him in the championship team for the Mid-Western USA Volleyball championships. Our team was sort of a movie tale - roughly speaking we were ranked near last, 19th of 20 teams, and somehow even through half our team having injuries, we pulled it through and won. The attached photo is the winning team and Tony was #8. I personally think the world was a better and more interesting place with Tony in it and I believe he will be greatly missed.
Sincerely, Mike (Lew)

Dear Yelda,
It is hard to absorb that Tony is no longer with us. To so many of us, he was helpful, funny, cheerful, and patient. He was a great guy, and I miss him.
