David Shannon Obituary
Charlotte
David Shannon, 18, of Charlotte, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Saturday, October 27, 2012 in Carrboro, North Carolina.
David was a native of Charlotte, graduated from Myers Park High School, and was presently a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Carolyn L. Shannon.
David's immediate family includes his parents, Hugh and Katy Shannon; his brother, Stephen Graham Shannon; his paternal grandfather, James V. Shannon, all of Charlotte; his maternal grandparents, Charles Graham Clapp and Gloria G. Clapp, of Greensboro; aunts and uncles, James R. and Julie Shannon of Tawas City, Michigan, Mark L. and Mary K. Shannon of Austin, Texas, Carol A. Shannon of Blue Ridge, Georgia, and Broughton and Duncan Burnet of Summerfield, North Carolina: cousins, Keith and Darci Shannon and their daughter Susie, Scott and Sara Shannon, Auburn Shannon, Jennifer Shannon, Ryan Shannon, and Jason Shannon; and his beloved dog Buster.
A service in celebration of David's life was held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 3, 2012, at Carmel Baptist Church, 1145 Pineville-Matthews Rd. Matthews, NC 28105.
The family will gather following the service at the church to greet friends.
David was a wonderful young man who loved life, and was loved by all who knew him. David served in his church as a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, and summer camp counselor. He was in the National Honor Society and lettered in football, track and field, and swimming at Myers Park. He also won state championships and national awards in Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), an international student business organization. He was a third generation Tar Heel, living his dream in the footsteps of his grandfather Charles Clapp (1953) and mother Katy Shannon (1985). A friend describes David as "a shining example of all that is good in mankind-energy, kindness, beauty, strength, happiness, intelligence and friendship."
A scholarship fund has been established at the University of North Carolina. The David Shannon Memorial Fund, UNC Chapel Hill Office of University Advancement, 208 W. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

Dear Katy and Hugh
When these years go by so things can't change. The best memories I have is being at Carmel Presby you looking like you were going to tip over pregnant with sweet David, and I behind you pregnant with Mary. And at the Christmas program seeing the cutest little blonds standing holding hands singing carols together. That would be Emily and Stephen. My heart is broken for the family and friends of Mr Shannon, there are no words that can meet the magnitude of your loss. But I am truly sorry and my sincere prayers are with you all. Shannon Family - I didn't know David well, but couldn't help noticing his humility, kindness, maturity, smile and the contagious joy of our Savior. As a fellow CarmelKidz leader in ministry, I share his and Jesus' love for our kidz. Our son, Ben, was privileged to know David through their mutual friends, Matt & Meredith and enjoyed the time he spent with David at the beach last spring. What a special young man he was! What a legacy he left for so many who loved him.
As parents, our hearts grieve with yours. We have no idea the depth of sorrow you must surely feel, but we do know that there is comfort through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ who left his disciples with these words: "I am leaving you with a gift - peace of mind and heart. I have been thinking about you constantly since I heard the news about David. Our family experienced a similar loss when my nephew was accidentally shot while a student at App State three years ago. I didn't know David very well, but we had gone to school together since Carmel and shared many friends. Although we weren't close, David's bright personality and positive attitude had a great impact on my life, and I know there are so many others who feel the same way. We will never forget you David.

To David's mom: I showed my son, who is 10 year old, your son's picture and asked my son if he knew David. My son said, "Yes, I see him at church and he was at camp." I cannot imagine your loss, but I know that my son spoke on about how he admired David and that he wanted to grow up to work with other kids like David was doing. What a nightmare this week has been. We were so grieved to hear Sunday as we arrived at church. We have prayed for you and asked family to pray for you and Stephen as you try to put one foot in front of the other each day. Mark had the blessing of serving and lodging with David at Children's camp in the summer of 2011 (a cabin with just the two of them leading.) He was so impressed with his ability to relate to the boys and his maturity. He found him to be a humble guy. May The Lord carry you. "The Lord is the one who sustains me." (Ps. 54:46.) "Record my lament, list my tears on your scroll" (Ps56:8). "My soul is weary with sorrow, strengthen me according to your word(Ps119:28) Know you are loved.

Our family has just been overwhelmed by the good example David was to the young students at Carmel. Our 2 oldest have recently been in 1st and 3rd grades where David served. While I never met David I feel as though I knew him by the stories that his Aunt Broughton shared with me. She would always brag on him and what a great young man he was. I am so very sorry for your loss but please take comfort in the love and prayers you have coming your way from family, friends and even strangers. What a wonderful man David was judging from all the beautiful comments on this page. I could only imagaine the pride you are feeling knowing how many lives he has positively impacted. Katy, Hugh and Stephen, When we moved back to Charlotte two years ago, it was a very difficult time for our family. Lexie felt so alone in high school. David was the first friend that reached out to her and introduced her to others so she had a community. That's how he was. His big smile and bigger heart brought people happiness and he made everyone feel better. He was such a blessing to everyone, so full of enthusiasm and joy, it gushed out of him and spilled over . We grieve with you, our hearts are heavy for you, but we know that the Lord has welcomed him and smiles upon him. David is remembered as the beautiful, caring, young man of Christ that he was.
