Susan Curtis Obituary

Susan Jane Curtis

December 21, 1950 - June 6, 2017

Raleigh

Susan Jane Curtis, 66, passed away on June 6th. She was a lover of science and technology who inspired that same love and enthusiasm in others. A longtime employee of NC State University, she preferred a career close to the academic world - comfortable both at the front of a classroom, and behind the scenes.

Susan Jane was a multidisciplinary genius, with a broad range of exceptional skills, most notably those in photography, computers, pedagogy, and the study of nature. She was offbeat and unusual, but always in a way that inspired a sharing of her unique view of the world. She was friendly, and accommodating, and enjoyed few things more than being an exceptional host. She would spend hours preparing and cooking family meals on the weekends, always seeming to 'accidentally' leave enough for her guests to have leftovers for the week.

She adored animals, especially her dogs, and never felt comfortable without one (or more) at her side. She lived for trips to the beach, and could be seen giving impromptu lessons on marine biology to children who happened upon her investigating a horseshoe crab.

Susan Jane is survived by her four children: Brown Biggers (and spouse, Brooke Spangler), Carmen Biggers, JT Sauls, and Jamey Sauls; her sister, Theresa Curtis; and niece, Jennifer Curtis. She is also survived by her ex-husband and friend John B. Sauls. She is predeceased by her first husband, Robert B. Biggers; her parents, Marilou B. and Thomas E. Curtis; her brother: C. Frederick Curtis; and her sister, Liz Curtis-Holm. The family would also like to recognize the tremendous friendship and love of her good friend, Robert McGee.

A memorial service will be held at the Carolina Friends School Upper School Meeting Hall on Saturday June 17 at 3pm.

In lieu of flowers, her family has requested donations made in her name to the SPCA of Wake County.

I am very sad to learn of SJ's passing. She was always very helpful and friendly to me. In addition to crossing paths in Jordan Hall, we would sometimes see each other at violin concerts. She loved music and was proud of her niece's musical accomplishments. She was also proud of her son's accomplishments in the library world. I will miss seeing SJ and having these conversations so much. I offer my deepest condolences to her family and loved ones.

Our hearts are broken here at NCSU too. SJ was fun to "play" with (lunchtime fitness group), always friendly and caring. Her menus for family gatherings made our mouths water. She bragged on her kids and loved her cats and dogs. I met her in the parking lot - listening to and watching our resident red-tail hawk above the athletic fields. She always was supportive of us gal pals and our families. She is loved and will be missed.

Susan Jane was the type of person that you may not see all the time, but when you did it seemed like it was just yesterday you had seen her. In difficult times she was always there to support you, making you relax, and turning a mountain into a mole hill. We know she cared deeply for her family and our thought and prayers go out to them in hopes to bring them comfort. She will be missed, but always in our hearts.

Susan Jane and I enjoyed technology associated with the Apple Macintosh computer. I so cherished our times of working together at NC State University. Warm Regards, Theresa-Marie Rhyne
