Ellen Buchsbaum Obituary

BUCHSBAUM

Born in Chicago in 1932 to Lazarus and Rose Krinsley, Ellen K. Buchsbaum graduated from Hyde Park High School and Oberlin College. As her teaching career progressed, she soon became a leader in early childhood education, as director of Pilgrim Preschool in Oak Park, Illinois, as early childhood specialist for Comprehensive Community Child Care in Cincinnati, and as the Director of Early Childhood Education at the Greater Cincinnati YMCA. She was recipient of the Comprehensive Community Child Care Recognition Award in 1991. After retiring, Ellen continued her love of learning through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, immersing herself in fields ranging from chemistry to opera to cinema. She also traveled extensively, especially to visit her extended and beloved family in Ireland.

Ellen married Philip Buchsbaum in 1954 and their loving relationship lasted until his death in 1999. They had two children, Andy and Kathy, who, along with Phil, were the center of Ellen's life. Ellen and Phil's love, commitment, and partnership continue to be an inspiration to Andy and Kathy and to family and friends across the country.

Ellen will be forever remembered for her strength and honesty, her kindness and optimism, as someone who cared deeply about fairness and justice in the world. She loved her family and friends and freely welcomed others into her circle, always seeing the best in the people around her.

Preceded in death by her husband Philip, brother Richard Krinsley, niece Jan Krinsley, and dear friend Devin Brain, Ellen is survived by daughter Kathy Cotter and husband Mike of Braintree, MA; son Andy Buchsbaum and wife Cathy Fleischer of Ann Arbor, MI; grandchildren Sean and Katie Cotter, and Seth and Jesse Buchsbaum; brother David Krinsley; sisters-in-law Ellen M. Buchsbaum and Susan Krinsley; nieces and nephews Jamie, Carolyn, Jeanne and Brian Krinsley; Karen Crystal; and Rich and Jamie Buchsbaum; and numerous great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends, including the WE group.

Funeral services will be Sunday, Aug. 20, at 11:30 at Weil's Funeral home, 8350 Cornell Road, Cincinnati. Visitation will begin at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be directed to Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Cincinnati, PO Box 210093, Cincinnati, OH 45221.

I first met Ellen through the film classes I held at OLLI and we became instant and fast friends. I used to telephone her and talk about a multitude of subjects--and lost touch when I became very ill last Spring and was in hospital and then recovering through the late Summer of 2017. I could not find her phone number thereafter and just now, a full year later, located it in a desk drawer--only to find that I am, indeed, a year late--forever. She was a dear person, always so kind and so sweet. I've missed her this past year--and will miss her in all the years to come. My belated sympathy goes out to her family and her many, many friend. She spoke of you often, and of her Irish friends.

Dear Kathy, Andy, and Ellen,
Your mother and sister-in-law was the kindest person I have known. It was a pleasure to work with her, to be her friend, and be her and Phil's next door neighbor for many years. I extend my deepest sympathies to you all, as I know Andrew would if he were alive.
Know that you are in my thoughts.
Love, Judy

Ellen was my oldest friend, we had met at age 3 and 4 and stayed friends for. All these years. She was a loving model for me. We remained friends even when we lived far from each other.
