David Weyant Obituary

ODESSA - Reverend David Franklin Weyant, age 75, of Odessa, Texas, passed away on December 18, 2016.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Thursday, December 22, 2016, at First United Methodist Church in Odessa with Terry Tamplen officiating. Graveside service will be held at Monahans Memorial Cemetery at 2pm.

David was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania on July 29, 1941, to Owen and Betty Weyant. He graduated from Bedford High School in 1959. He received advanced degrees from Ferrum College in VA, McMurry University in Abilene, TX, and Moravian Theological Seminary in Bethlehem, PA. He dedicated his life and career to ministry.

He was ordained as an Elder in 1976 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of The United Methodist Church. After transferring to the New Mexico Conference in 1977, he served under appointment until he retired in 2005.

Rev. Weyant's appointments in the NM Conference included: Iraan, TX; Kermit, TX; Highland UMC, Odessa, TX; First UMC, Hobbs, NM; Monahans/Wickett UMCs, TX; El Paso District Superintendent and Odessa District Superintendent. He founded and directed Camp Sunshine, a camp for mentally challenged individuals hosted yearly at Sacramento Methodist Assembly.

David loved baseball and was a lifelong Pittsburgh Pirates fan. He also enjoyed golf, woodworking, and gardening and completed the Texas Master Gardener program. He was an active member and past president of the Odessa Downtown Lions Club. He and his late wife Carol were actively involved in and embraced by the communities where they lived.

David is preceded in death by his loving wife of 43 years, Carol Grove Weyant.

He is survived by two daughters, Janet Weyant of Odessa, TX and Amy Weyant of Decatur, GA. He is also survived by his siblings, brother, Tom Weyant and his wife Marsha of Utica, NY, sister, Jane Deutschmann and her husband Rudy of Boulder, CO and sister, Lori Weyant of Pittsburgh, PA.

Throughout his ministry, he signed his newletters and correspondence "Disciple in the making, David." We rejoice and celebrate as heaven welcomes home a devoted disciple and faithful servant.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sacramento Methodist Assembly or Texas Lions Camp.

Arrangements are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home. To send family condolences please sign the guestbook at www.sunsetodessa.com

My condolences to David's family for your loss. I was a classmate of David's from Bedford High School Class of 1959. In fact, we rode the school bus together as we both lived in Manns Choice at the time and he used to tease me a lot, but always good-natured teasing. David was our go-to man to emcee our class reunions and he always did a wonderful job. He was truly a gentleman and he will be missed.

Rest in peace, friend.

So sad to hear of this loss. David married us and baptized both of my children, it feels as if we have lost a family member. He was such a good man and faithful servant, I enjoyed his sermons immensely. He always made the word of God so relatable to your own personal journey with God.

David was a friend, colleague, mentor, counselor, pastor and disciple of Jesus Christ. We enjoyed many Wednesday morning breakfasts with David and pastoral friends in Odessa. then we often met him on Friday mornings as well with a group of community members. My oldest daughter always told me that she wanted him to do her wedding. "I guess I waited too long" she said with sadness when I told her of David's promotion to heaven. He will be missed by many.

David was a kind and gentle man. I loved the time I spent with him and remember how much fun we had following the steps of the Wesley's in England. Loved seeing him and his cohorts on Friday mornings at breakfast. He will be missed, but he's where he always wanted to be. What a wonderful place to spend Christmas!

Monday, I reviewed my weekly calendar and what was on it. Today, I was scheduled to make my regular call to my good friend David, Monday afternoon after returning from an eye appointment with my retina specialist I received a text from a friend telling me that David had passed away Sunday evening. David Weyant was more than my friend. He was a model for me, one of kindness and humility. He touched life after life with his gentle manor. He was a wonderful unassuming soul. He blessed me during the time I spent with him
When we served on the joint NM/NWTC cabinets. We affectionately referred to him as King David and I was known as David the Lesser. We talked over the years after leaving active ministry and up until recently David was always upbeat. During my last call I said I don't want to be a bother if you aren't able to talk or visit and he insisted I continue to call and that he looked forward to our visits. I will have to wait for our next visit, but in the mean time, my dear friend will be spending Christmas with the Angels in peace without pain at rest from the suffering and walking and breathing free from the anguish of the recent months and the constant health battles that he fought for several years. I look forward to seeing him again, but until then God bless my friend, King David Weyant! May the Peace that is beyond understanding be with Amy and Janet and the Spirit of God's grace of walk with them too!
