Albert Welsh Obituary

Albert Lyman Welsh II, died January 24, 2006. He had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage in February of 2005. Al was born September 9, 1931, to Lena B. and Francis Robertson Welsh, in Oklahoma City. After graduating from Classen High School in 1949, Al attended the University of Oklahoma. At O.U., Al was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity, which he served in later years as a member of the fraternity's house board. Al became a member of Phi Beta Kappa during his senior year and graduated with a degree in journalism. He married Carol Holderby in 1953. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Al attended Stanford University, earning an MBA in 1958. He then worked for Ford Motor Company in California and Michigan before returning to Oklahoma City as a partner in the investment firm Parker, Bishop, and Welsh. During the early 1970's, Al was a principal developer of the Edmond Racquet Club, which he managed until 1984 when the club was sold and he returned to the investment business. During the early 1970's, Al was a member of the Board of Trustees of Heritage Hall School. Carol and Al were members of Church of the Savior, where Al sang in the choir, served as an Elder, and worked with the Mobile Meals Program. For the past several years, Al enjoyed tutoring school children at the Presbyterian Urban Mission. A golf enthusiast since childhood, surely Al's favorite trip abroad was a golf tour in Scotland which he and Carol made in 1993. Al is survived by his wife Carol; his son David and wife Caryl and children Bryan and Alyson of Herndon, Virginia; his daughter, Elizabeth Fernandez and husband Michael and children John Michael and Erin of Dallas, Texas; and his daughter Nancy Matthews and husband Paul and children Jackson, Cole, and Rachel of Edmond. Al is also survived by two nieces, Mindy McClellan and Carol Holderby. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend; Al was truly a gentle man who will be greatly missed. A memorial service for Al will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 28, at Church of the Savior.
