George Leighton Obituary

George Kenneth Leighton, long time resident of Nikiski, Alaska passed away in May 20, 2022. George (Ken) was born April 12, 1938, in Ocala, FL to Ruby Mae and Edward Randall Leighton. George grew-up in the Ocala area, joining the US Army after his high school graduation in 1956, then moved on to the US Air Force in 1958. He served his country proudly thru the Vietnam War and numerous assignments with SAC/MAC until his retirement in 1977 at Elmendorf AFB. He then worked at Unocal in Nikiski for about 15 years, before retiring in 1993.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and continued to serve, by joining the US Coast Guard Auxiliary Kenai Flotilla and volunteering for over 41 years.
His wife, Mae Margaret Garner preceded him in death in 2013 after 51 years of marriage. He is survived by Michelle Leighton (daughter), Scott and Chrystal Leighton (son and wife), Bryce Leighton (grandson), McKenna Leighton and Connor Peterkin (granddaughter and significant other), Pat and Roger Osborne (sister and husband), Don and Paulette Leighton (brother and wife), Randy and Susan Leighton (brother and wife), and Lou Leighton (widow of brother Harrell Leighton), as well as numerous other family members and friends. George requested no services be held for him. A graveside service for family will be held in College Mound, TX in the fall.
