I met Fred Rovai when I was posted to a NATO HQs in Denmark in 1979.
He had already been a soldier in the US Army, when I was born. Served in Vietnam and had postings to Europe. I was a Sergeant of the German Army on my first posting with little education and no experience.
He motivated me to read National Geographic to improve my language and my knowledge about scientific subjects. Introduced me to the local US Community and US soap operas.
And changed my professional life by lending me a programmable TI Calculator to take my first steps in electronic data processing. He later advised me on my first personal computer and showed me how to use it. Which led to my Batchelor degree in Business Management and Electronic data processing.
He was friendly and helpful and he always was a teacher. He knew everything. I could ask him any question and he would have some good advice.
On occasions when he would not agree with my opinion or decision, his way of talking would change from a friend/friend way to a father/son kind of communication. Which was okay since I was so much younger than he was.
I am proud to have been a friend of this extraordinary man for more than 40 years - and I am very sad to have lost him.

Fred was a beloved colleague and friend. His wit and dry humor along with his brilliance leaves a void that is irreplaceable. Be blessed Fred, you are missed.
