Munir Nasr Obituary

Born in Lebanon in 1940, Dr. Munir Nasr graduated from the American University of Beirut with high distinction and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He subsequently completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the American University Medical Center, in Beirut Lebanon and a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Iowa. Following his fellowship, he joined the faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles for 2 years before returning to Lebanon and joining the faculty of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at his alma mater, the American University of Beirut where he established the practice of gynecologic oncology, the first of its kind in the country. During his tenure at the American University of Beirut, he provided high-quality care to countless women with gynecologic malignancies irrespective of their abilities to pay and trained many physicians who currently carry his legacy around the world.

In 1986, Dr. Munir Nasr and family immigrated to Norfolk, VA where he joined the faculty of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Eastern Virginia Medical School and later Virginia Oncology Associates where he continued to provide exceptional care to women in Hampton Roads. Throughout his career, he was known as an excellent teacher and mentor and a compassionate physician with high intellect and extraordinary surgical skills.

A mentor to many and a friend to everyone, Dr. Munir Nasr was a highly respected member of the medical society and a fatherly figure to the local Lebanese-American community. He was a generous person with a big heart who always lent a hand to those in need.

A teacher, physician, counselor and friend, Munir's memory lives on in those whom he touched in our community and abroad. He made the world a better place for so many around him. He will be sorely missed.

Dr. Munir Nasr is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 45 years, Annie Nasr, his son Dr. Nadim Nasr and wife Sima Nasr, his beloved grandchildren Vincent and Mina and numerous family members in the United States and Lebanon.

Due to the current circumstances, the memorial service will be held at a later date. Condolences to the family may be offered online at hdoliver.com.

Munir was so much more than a physician. He was also a caring friend and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to have known him. As my physician, I was guided me through a very tough time medically by his caring and compassionate knowledge and belief. After he retired, there were so many times I wished I could have had his guidance and advice again. I feel so blessed to have know this angel on earth and may he find peace and the same compassion in heaven that he shared with so many here on earth. God bless you Munir and blessings to your family as well. All who knew you mourn your loss, but I will rejoice in the memories of the times spent with you. Rest in peace my friend and always remember you were loved.

It is with immense grief and sorrow that I write these lines as a tribute to my closest friend, Munir, whose recent passing took a toll on all of us who knew him.
My friendship with Munir covers 6 decades starting in the mid 1950s when we were teen agers growing up in Hammana and Btekhney. We have remained in touch eversince: through university, medical school and early residency training at the American University of Beirut and later in the USA: Iowa, Los Angeles, Noorfolk/Virginia Beach.
Munir epitomzed what a complete phyician/gentleman is all about, be it in his professionalism, academic accoplishments, integrity and above all, humility.
With his passing, Munir leaves an indelible mark on so many of us who were fortunate to have known him, be it his former students, trainees, colleagues and friends. I am privileged to have been one of those.
Rest in peace my friend.
My deepest condolences to Annie and Nadim and all the Nasr family.

Dr Nasr is an inspiration and role model. At the American University of Beirut (AUB), everybody still say he is an artis in surgery. He loved Hammana and the USA and excelled in both places not only as a doctor but also by earning respect and affection from all who met him. We will always remember you!

Annie, Maria and I send you our deepest condolences. Munir was not only a recognized skillful surgeon and teacher, but also a gentleman and a friend. I remember his smile and always positive attitude, and our days playing tennis at the Yacht club (he would always beat me with his competitive nature). No words can express our feelings, and although time goes by it seems like we met you and him at Aldos yesterday! We are now in NYC (Manhattan) but likely will return to VB in the near future. We will cherish the memories of a beautiful person forever. Best regards to you, your son and the extended family. Maria and Sergio Oehninger

Munir was my teacher and for the last 35 years.my best friend. He was a great surgeon. I have scrubbed with him and observing him operate was like watching a great painter or composer at work. He loved life and loved to laugh. I have so many memories of him that will stay with me till my time comes. RIP my friend
