Fredrick Mathews Obituary

Frederick R. Mathews

POUGHKEEPSIE - Frederick R. "Fred" Mathews, 54, of Poughkeepsie, passed away on March 19, 2013 at home. Fred had valiantly fought the effects of brain cancer for 7 years. His struggle helped to forge the path for other victims of this disease who survive today. The use of the drug Avastin, that is used today, was an immediate outgrowth of the clinical trials that he was involved with, used and survived on. He was born in Syracuse, NY on September 28, 1958, the son of Carlton & Gail Barton Mathews. He was a graduate of Hudson Valley Community College with an A.A.S., BS from SUNY Technical College in Utica, NY and had a Masters in Electrical Engineering from R.I.T. Fred married Mary Beth Gehrig on September 6, 1986 in Sacred Heart Church in Troy, NY. She survives at home. He was a member of St. Martin de Porres Church. He was employed by IBM in E. Fishkill, NY as a Research Engineer for 5 years before being diagnosed with his illness. Previously he worked for Eastman Kodak for 15 years. He coached and won the Poughkeepsie Little League Championship with the PAL team. He was a loving husband and devoted father. Always the family mediator, jokester and care free person. He grew up spending summers at his grandparent's home on the St. Lawrence Seaway. That is where he developed his love of boating, fishing and all water sports throughout the rest of his life. Survivors include his children: Zach, Josh and Michaella Mathews all at home; Mother: Gail Healy of Alex Bay, NY; Brothers: Carl Mathews of St. Louis, Missouri; Tommy Healy of Alex Bay, NY and Timmy Healy of Myrtle Beach, SC. There are several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his Father: Carlton Mathews and Step-Father: Thomas Healy. Visitation will be Friday, March 22, 2013 4-8 PM at the Wm. G. Miller & Son FH, Inc., 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday 9:30AM in St. Martin de Porres Church, 118 Cedar Valley Rd., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. Family and friends are asked to meet at the church. Burial will follow in the family plot in St. Peter's Cemetery. Memorial Donations maybe made to: Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Avenue, New York, NY 10065. You dont know our family, but we attend the 5 pm Mass at St. Martin's. When we would leave Mass, I noticed Fred...deep in prayer and clutching his rosary beads. I spoke to him once and sensed that something may be troubling him. I told him that Jesus loves him. He smiled, thanked me and we went our separate ways. I was saddened to learn of his passing, but know he is with the angels in heaven - happy and healthy. Though I didnt know him, he inspired me. God bless.

Dear Carl, Pam, MaryBeth and Family,
We are so sorry that all of you and Fred have had to endure the pain of the last 7 years. Fred fought a valiant battle against an insidious disease that has brought so much pain to so many families. We are so glad that we got to spend time with Fred in October and will hold on to that memory. We wish you peace and comfort and hold on to the belief that we will all be reunited one day and that Fred is now free of cancer. Please know we will continue to hold you in our hearts and prayers. Love,
John, Michele, Sarah, Zach and Kate Kraham
