Charles Hayes Obituary

CHARLES (CHUCK) EDWARD HAYES December 2, 1937 - October 18, 2014 Chuck amazed us all with his love for GOD, his friendliness to all and his amazing love for his family. He loved serving the church and he served as church president when he was in California and when he was overseas. He wanted everyone to know about GOD's greatest gift of all: Jesus. Chuck was born in Omaha, Nebraska and his parents moved to Superior, Nebraska where he spent most of his childhood. He loved sports, playing baseball, basketball and his favorites won him medals in pole vaulting, track and field, and as a quarterback on his high school and college teams. One of the major highlights in his life at the time was the Christian influence of Coach Tom Osborne of Nebraska's Hastings College. That relationship with the coach continued up to 4 months ago just prior to Chuck's hospitalization. After college, Chuck went on to Officer training school for the United States Air Force during the Vietnam war as a navigator and an electronic warfare operator. He served 20 years and was discharged at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During that time, he was married to Marion Strong and they had four children together: Kristin, Pamela, Shannon and Chad. Sadly, that union ended. He started his second career of 25 years as an agent for State Farm Insurance. In 1983, he married Shawn Konikow, who also had four children: Sherri, David, Shane and Laurie. Together, they had eight children and fourteen grandchildren with a great grandson due around Thanksgiving. He adored them all and prayed for them and their families daily. Churck loved running and ran a variety of races, including the Boston Marathon in 1977. He stated, "of course I am going to compete. I have to get out and run that day anyway and it's always fun to run with others." Running was as natural for him as breathing and many times he reported exhilaration of feeling like he was flying. He reported that it was quality time conversing with GOD. Another one of his loves was golf. He walked on a cloud the day he got his Hole-in-One at the Fallbrook Golf Club, less than one month prior to his 75th birthday. Chuck had many other interests that could not all fit on this page, but if you asked him which one he preferred the most, he would say "loving the Lord and telling everyone about Him, wherever I go." Memorial Service will be at 1pm on Monday, October 27 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 5545 Alessandro Blvd., Riverside, CA.
