Dear Mary, Adam, Brendan, Meghan and extended family:

I was barely out of my teens when I started working at FitzGerald and couldn't believe there was actually a real life character like John -- straight out of a Raymond Chandler novel. Doing business in a one-room office exploding with stacks of paper and an ancient Smith-Corona, he was funny, charming, perceptive, glib and a dealer with intensely strong convictions. It didn't take long to see that beneath the crusty, devil-may-care persona was a person who actually cared quite deeply and lived by a very strong moral code. I learned a great deal from him and always appreciated the patience and respect he generously gave to a young woman just starting out. He stayed true to himself even though that wasn't always easy and I feel quite sure that he is at peace. I hope it helps to know how many people will hold his memory dear and how much John loved you all and how proud he was of his children and beloved granddaughter. I know this to be true because I got it straight from the source. My love and sympathy for your loss and for the difficult path of these last months.

Dear Family McCarthy: John lived a robust life, pre- and post- pneumonectomy, as we used to kid (over our lunches at -- where else? -- Camille's). The combination of his straight face, profound sense of irony and mastery of the ordinary Gaelic gifts made him a formidable force in his professions (news and PR). When I stepped away from Blue Cross in the Early 80s, he gave me not only encouragement as an aspiring consultant, he handed me a fabulous client and a fantastic campaign. I barely new John then, except by reputation. What a great guy. We shared one other thing, too; we both worked as police reporters for the Providence Journal and enjoyed reminiscing about cops and crooks we knew and loved. I'll miss "Monsignor" McCarthy and his light, which illuminated all around him. God rest his soul. Remember him as one of a kind, because he was. . . . -- 30 --
