Charles Ebberts Obituary

REDDING - Charles Willis "Bill" Ebberts, Jr. was born November 6, 1920 in Burns, OR and died December 11, 2008 at home in Redding, CA.
He was preceded in death by parents, Norma McKenzie and Charles W. Ebberts, four siblings and granddaughter, Marla Warren.
He is survived by wife, Peggy Louton Ebberts, stepchildren Margaret Warren (Ernie) of Bandon, OR, Roy Martin of Anderson, CA, Steven Louton (Nette) of Lancaster, CA, Carol Louton of San Rafael, CA, Mark Louton (Tracie) of Maui, Hawaii, Suzanne Tucker (Richard) of Redding, CA. He is survived by grandchildren Sharla Ehorn of Chico, Tara Argain of Lodi, Amanda Knox of Tennessee, Mark and Kaytlin Louton of Lancaster, CA and eight great-grandchildren.
Charlie graduated from Westwood High and then entered the U.S. Army, stationed in England and Wales during WWII. He then attended California College of Arts in Oakland for two years, later receiving his A.A. from Shasta College. Charlie was a mill worker all his life in Prineville, OR and then Redding, CA from 1962 until retirement. His avocation was Western art and cartooning. During the '70's, he was political cartoonist for the Redding Record Searchlight, and drew the children's page and several comic strips for the Redding Outlook.
After Charlie's first marriage to Elsie Martin ended in divorce, he joined the Parents Without Partners, where he met Peggy Louton. They were married in 1982. They enjoyed traveling all over the Western U.S. and four trips to Hawaii. Charlie was extremely intelligent and had a wonderful sense of humor and the ridiculous reflected in his drawings and playing with his grandchildren. He had an extensive library and loved classical music. He also enjoyed playing his mandolin and doing crossword puzzles. He loved visiting and cracking jokes with friends and family.
He loved all creatures, great and small, and always had a cat on his lap. Family services were held at Allen and Dahl Chapel and burial was at the Veteran's Cemetery in Igo.

I was tremendously saddened to hear of Uncle Bill's passing. He had been in my thoughts lately and I regret not contacting him. He and my dad were very close and I remember many stories that my dad told of Uncle Bill's wit and logic. I have one of his paintings, which I treasure.

Hello Peggy,

I know it has been a long time, but I was saddened to read that Charlie had left us. He will be missed. Yes I can see him with a kitty sitting on his lap.
