Jean Carpenter Obituary

Jean Leroy Carpenter, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather went home to be with his Lord and Savior peacefully April 1, 2009. Jean was born on October 3, 1925 in Mt. Vernon, WA, to Charles and Laura Carpenter. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mona Carpenter, his son Steve Carpenter of Brisbane, his daughter Nancy Mullen of Seattle and his daughter Debbie Shipman of Bella Vista. Jean has six grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Jean served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was ordained as a Lutheran pastor and served as the first principal of a Christian school in Glendale. He founded the first Christian FM radio station in the Los Angeles area, KHOF. In the 1960s he purchased KQMS radio station in Redding with the goal of providing broadcasting with Christian values. After selling KQMS Jean returned to school at CSU Chico to earn a master's degree in speech. He taught speech, radio and television classes at Shasta College for 20 years.
Over the years Jean was instrumental in many video projects at Bethel Church in Redding. He owned his own business, Vided, with the goal of assisting pastors and missionaries in their outreach endeavors. His heart was focused on missions and he and Mona supported many missionary friends around the world surrounding them with prayer and encouragement. Jean had a map of the world on the wall posted with time zones and pictures so he could know what time it was in other countries to be able to pray for specific missionaries at all times of day. Jean and Mona hosted frequent home meetings for missionaries and students of Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry and he delighted in interacting with people of all world cultures.
Jean's celebration of life memorial service will be held Tuesday April 7 at 9:30 a.m. at Bethel Church with viewing on Monday April 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Allen & Dahl Funeral Chapel in Redding. Mona has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Bethel Church video department to honor Jean's lifelong vision and passion.
One of Jean's favorite Bible verses was Jude 24: "Now unto Him who is able to keep you from falling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory faultless with great joy." Welcome home, Jean, into the presence of your Savior.

Jean was one of my teachers at Shasta College and I later got to know him at Bethel Church. In all cases I remember him as a fine man always ready to help and encourage any way he could. To the family, our condolences and prayers are with you now concerning the passing of this gracious man.
Sincerely,

April 6, 2009

My wife, Doris, and I both worked with Jean at Shasta College. In fact, Virginia Chapell and I hired Jean. The campus TV station and program - that he was to coordinate - never developed, because of financial limitations. Jean moved into our speech and English departments. He was always pleasant, courteous, and professional. He continuously kept alert to new developments and innovations in his disciplines. And, he enjoyed his students and worked well with the administration and faculty.

Our sympathy.

Sincerely,

We are saddened by Jean’s passing and wish to acknowledge all the wonderful and generous work Jean did in making the DVD’s for the annual Multi-cultural Celebration. All of us who helped to make the Multi-cultural Celebration a possibility appreciated his enthusiasm and support of this community event. The last time we spoke with him he said he planned to bring his grandson to the 2010 Celebration. We still look forward to seeing his grandson. We will miss Jean.
