Teresa Hill Obituary

PLYMOUTH - Teresa "Mimi" Hill passed away Monday, April 22, 2013. She was born in Treviso, Italy on Feb. 1, 1938, to Ettore Sovera and Maria Della Santa Sovera. Mimi was raised in Cervia, Italy during World War II and frequently recounted tales of the occupation and what her life was like as a child. She owned one doll, whose clothes were sewn of the silk from Allied Forces parachutes. In later years, she attended secondary schools in Switzerland and London. In 1963 she married Andy Harris of Swan Quarter and immigrated to the United States. A naturalized citizen since 1972, she was very proud of being an American and never ceased reminding her children of the good fortune of living in a country that was free. A resident of Roper and Plymouth since 1971, she spent the last 12 years in Greenville to be closer to family.
A lifelong homemaker, she was devoted to her children. In 1974 she married Ted Hill and her family became a bit larger growing to include his children, Freddy, Susan, Carol and Lawrence.
Mimi's hobbies were varied and included knitting, painting, gardening, collecting the obscure, smoking and drinking wine. In later years she admitted that the last two were probably not such a good idea.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ted Hill; brothers, Amedeo Sovera and Giovanni Sovera; and sister, Guiliana Caffettieri.
She is survived by her daughter, Samantha H. Mansfield and husband, Chris; and son, Scott Harris and his wife, Paige. She has four grandchildren separated in birth by 22 months, what she called the "busiest, most wonderful two years of her life:" Noah Mansfield, Simon Harris, Abby Harris, and Payne Mansfield. She was proud that she witnessed the birth of each of these wonderful children.
In lieu of flowers, she asked that people practice a random act of kindness. In her words, "S***...I don't need flowers. Have them do something nice for somebody."
Arrangements by Walker Funeral Home. Service and visitation will be at gravesite following inurnment of her ashes at 11 a.m. Friday at Hillside Memorial Gardens in Plymouth.

I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Ms. Mimi last year. I visited her with her daughter Sam. I had the fond memory of witnessing a fiesty lady who was still full of spunk and fire. Upon being asked to do something that she refused to do...She pulled herself up on the bed, crossed her arms together, folded her lips together tightly and re-stated in case we didn't hear it the first time...NO!!! (A me and Sam insider)!! My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.

Because I lost my mother at such a young age~ I developed a keen sense of relationships with women~ my girlfriends, sometimes their mothers, women that I fortunate to work with and then my friends and their mothers! I have been so blessed to have hadso many women have such a positive influence on my life!! It is true that we should be thankful for the people that come into our lives~ whether it is their coming or their going ~ and for what we learned from the experience~ positive or negative. Some people teach us more about the kind of person we want to become and some teach us about qualities we would rather not exhibit. Mimi was one of those women that I will also hold near and dear to my heart! With her tiny frame and very thick, Italian accent~ I learned things about being a mother, generousity, hospitality, and much more!! Her home introduced me to Nutella!! =) She shared her Italy with me! She treated me to mini get aways with Samantha Harris Mansfield~ she purchased us all the same fleece pullovers~ when we laid by the pool, she would bring us fresh fruit and beverages~ she listened intently when we had conversations and then would respond in the most truthful way I have ever seen~ hand motions were just a bonus!!! She loved to watch birds and play in her plants!!! I loved watching her on ther tricycle with her basket!!! What a blessing to have been a part of her life and love~ in her obituary, Scott quotes Mimi as saying "she doesn't need flowers~ just have them do something nice for someone else!" I appreciate the simplicity and the authenticity I learned from Mimi!!! I wish I had stopped by to see her in Greenville all the times I thought about it~ so ~ in her honor~ I will begin today thanking some of the women that have impacted my life.... and until we meet again my friend!!!! Thank YOU for sharing your life with me~
