Norman Myers Obituary

Norman was born on January 23, 1929 in Hoquiam, WA to Charles and Alice Myers and passed away at the age of 88 on August 16, 2017 in Sacramento, CA. Norm grew up in Longview, WA and graduated from Robert A. Long High School in 1947. As a youth Norm joined the BSA and worked his way up to Eagle Scout. Norm served in the U.S. Coast Guard from January 1948 - July 1952 during the Korean conflict. He married his first wife, Rosetta, and mother of his three children in 1950. He was predeceased by her. Norm received a B.S. Degree in Education - Industrial Arts and a Master of Education Degree from Oregon State University. While in college he was initiated in 1956 as a member of Delta Chapter, Epsilon Pi Tau, Inc., the International Honorary Professional Fraternity in Industrial Arts and Industrial Vocational Education. Norm started teaching Industrial Education in 1957 within the Grant Union School District as a woodshop teacher. His students received many State awards for their outstanding work under his guidance and mentoring. He arose to the level of Vice-Principal and left the district in 1968 to work for the California State Department of Education as a consultant and was best known for starting the Middle Schools Exploring Technology Education Program. Norm received numerous awards in Industrial Arts and Technology, and retired after 37 years of dedicated service in the field of education. Norman is survived by his devoted wife Dorothy "Dot" Myers of 23 years; loving sons Lance (Rochelle) Myers and Callan (Kathleen) Myers and daughter Danan Myers; brother Marshall Myers of Washington; step-son Steve (Lora) Werry and step-daughter Suzie (Scott) Cohn; four grandchildren Jauschua (Amanda), Jerame (Michelle), Marina (Shane) and Callie; step-grandchildren Steven, Katie and Kailey, and five great-grand-children, Ethan, Megan, Boston, Collin and James. Norm was a longtime active member of the Sacramento YMCA and the Sacramento Masters Swim Team, competing in many pool-meets and open-water events. His hobbies included woodworking, crafts, reading and cheering for the Sacramento Kings. He enjoyed many years of retirement, traveling with Dot and their loving canine companions in their motorhome, making many friends wherever they ventured. Stormin' Norman may be gone but he will never be forgotten by those who knew and loved him. Norm wanted to be cremated and his wish has been granted. His ashes will be scattered in the mountains as he wished. A Celebration of Norm's life will be held Sunday, September 24th, from 1:00 3:30pm at Sierra 2 Center (Curtis Hall), 2791 24th St., Sacramento 95818. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Norm's name to the Sacramento YMCA, 2021 W St, Sacramento, CA 95818 or the Sacramento SPCA, 6201 Florin-Perkins Road, Sacramento, CA 95828.

I had the privilege of working with Norm at CDE in Vocational Education. Norm was passionate about educating young people in Industrial Education and Leadership Skills. When he wasn't travelling to schools he would take a swim at the Sac YMCA before coming to the Regional Office on 21st Street. My prayers are with you Dot and all the family.
